This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

A few more progress shots for folk...I'm going to be lazy and just throw some pics up... the Tapatalk picture insert engine the main reason TBH... Until I can figure out how to write notations for individual pics.

Any questions on my (hopefully not too) shabby or potentially leathal practices do ask...chip buttys for tea... The chef's gone out with her pals (again!).

Hope you're all enjoying the weekend and not stuck in traffic somewhere.

Jim

Ps..I had to re machine a rail as a cheeky endgrain crack/ shake was revealed ...see sad pencil emoji.

Pps. Stephen if you're reading this... The bandsaw is brilliantlImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Chip butty - is that a Yorkshire Bread Cake?
My wife yearns for Jap cakes which only seem to be made in Yorkshire - my favourite was Curd Tarts or Bilberry Tarts.

Tapatalk - pick a picture from your library and write before or afterwards.

Just soft rolls, though I do like a breadcake, that's what you'd get at the chippy....with gravey of course

Are you using leftover blue paint from the workshop build for the cabinets!

Looks good - interested to see the finished item

Funny you should say, the melamine is not too far off the blue in certain lights ... I'll be saving some back for the workshop

A few bits from this week...a whizz round with the r6.5mm round over bit... High five

Image

Glueing up the desk top...

Image

Drawing out a template using a skinny bit of mr mdf as a French curve...

ImageImage

Transfer and roughing out the waste with the jigger...

Image

Cleanup with the template and router...

ImageImage

The Axminster (no affiliation) twin flute, shear cut bits are great for large template work, focus and hold on tight tho!

Quite hard to capture as the curve is quite subtle. It's off centre too.

Image

Plenty of mess, but nice large chippings.

Image

Back on it tomorrow, I've bought some Fastcap 'speed tape' (posh double sided) to trial with some ABS (unglued) edging with the melamine, should be interesting

Impressive look given how simple everything seems.

It certainly fits the thread title description.

You cut the rough shape freehand then templated to size. Back when I made my dining chairs I also templated but I used the template for the bandsaw rough cut too. The original thread went with the old forum but I reposted just the pictures. have a look at the first few which show my home made template follower for the bandsaw.

viewtopic.php?f=26&t=1055

It meant I could stick the template on then cut and clean up one after the other then re-use the template.

That's a neat set up Robert, what are the little guide wheels from?

I also need to make a better extractor hood for the router, that's a nice solution.

Indeed ... Simple is a key part, the budget only allows for 2 weeks make time. The materials and techniques MFC, Sapele, Domino joints, hardware (bearing runners, concealed hinges to follow) all help to keep the price under control, though with most free standing pieces they are very much a labour of love as there usually a lot more design and thinking time/ problem solving going in.

Cheers Robert and Rod

They are just threaded rivet bushes that you use in sheet metal for machine screws. These are just held with wire nails instead of screws and not driven fully home so the bush can spin. Anything sticking past the blade and rubbing on the template would do it. I had a lot to do so made metal rollers but a bit of wood notched to clear the blade would be fine too.

Clever stuff. When ready for final assembly will you slide the boxes in from above then attach the top? How will you attach the boxes?

Hi

I popped the boxes on the floor, put the legs on upside down, the flipped upright before adding the top

Using cross dowel connectors and threaded insert nuts...

Got the handles on and we're all ready for a good rub down and oil up...

Finger pull detail with the obligatory end grain burn out... Not sure I can face rubbing it out, it's out of sight
