Desk & Alcoves (Mid Century Modern WIP) *Complete*

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Lovely work, Jim, and nice photos too. Good to see your workshop being used for its intended purpose. Not my taste in furniture, but so long as it is to your client's taste, that's all that counts.

Gorgeous. It actually looks much nicer than I thought it would. I mean the contrast of the colours, not the workmanship which I always knew would be excellent. Needs a chair now.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Love mid century furniture, and this is a great looking desk. I'd happily sit at that! :eusa-clap:

One question, was the melamine sheet bought as a faced board and then lipped?

Thanks Andy, very kind, and I know where yore coming from, the finish certainly sorted things out in the end and it's a bit of a marmite piece too, well like most MCM revival furniture is as the moment. A chair would of been lovely...I'll hint at that next time I'm round to do the Alcoves, though the gentleman will be spending a lot of time at the desk and quite likes his office chair (I think it's a Herman Miller - which is an excellent chair).

Thanks Matt...Yes, nothing fancy, just a sheet of MFC edged in ABS. I used FASTCAP 'speed tape' (posh double sided) I'm not 100% convinced on it's longevity but it's more affordable than an Edgebander or even a Portable Edgebander. The MFC really helped the budget which was tight and influenced the piece considerably. (Materials approx £200 + £40 drawer and hinge hardware).

That looks really good.
The fastcap looks interesting as a stop gap, I have been avoiding sheet work since I sold the edgebander, but there is some stuff I have to. I bought all my edging with me from the workshop so it would be good to get it used.

Thanks,

Indeed, IMO the FASTCAP speedtape is exactly that - a 'stop gap' - once applied it's designed to create a stronger bond over 24hrs, though after the weekend, with thumb pressure, it still had a little flex in it's slip plane. Hopefully it won't be back to bite me in a couple of months! The thin (glue) line of the tape seems to remain sticky too (so far), so there's potential for grubby'ness to be picked up and highlight the glue line.

Interesting, did you use the roller thing when applying it like on the product video? I could see the sticky edge making problems as well. Can I ask who is supplying it?

Lovely piece Jim

I really like the contrast between colour and timber and the lines are beautiful. I've never really looked at scandi stuff before, and wouldn't fit in my house, but I have found a real liking for it so for that too, cheers!

Thank you for your kind comments Roger, Mark and all.

I've shared the piece on a Furniture Group on Facebook too. I've been very touched by the un expected warm responses it's been getting, especially considering the use of Melamine or cheapy MFC at the end of the day, I'm also happy how the Sapele came out with the OSMO GLOSS 3011, I didn't wipe it off as much as I usually do. Sapele is growing on me, not too bad to machine if you keep the tools tight n sharp and very affordable. Of course it's super heavy stuff.

Best get cracking with the matching alcoves.

Thanks again, :obscene-drinkingcheers:

Very nice. Will you be fitting the lighting as per drawing? Only ask because if you find some nice fittings that match the furniture I may copy them when I make units in our lounge :D

Hi Matt, Thanks. Yes, lights to go in on install, end of next week...I'm using discreet LED tape lights, there's a glass shelf to go in the middle too.

Sorry Jim, I could have put that better above - I was running a bit wild with the PB issue.

Absolutely first class work mate! Love the design and your whole set up is wonderful, clean, crisp and efficient. Hope you enjoyed your chip buttie. ;)
