Breakfast Table (European Oak)

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Breakfast Table (European Oak)

Starting this little chap on Monday, not quite set on how I'm going to make the aprons yet :eusa-think: ...initial thoughts are to (cold) bag press up some band sawn Oak laminations. It's to match some existing Mackintosh themed furniture (not ebonised though, natural finish)

Made a start on the table this week...

After drawing out a full size ROD (behave!) of the underside.

I started on the curved apron.

Firstly the former...

Cut out an oversize of the curve with a trammel

Image

Then transferred to 18mm, rough cutting on the bandsaw, sandwiching and trimming to my template with the router table and bottom (or is it top?) bearing cutter...

Image
Image

Dimensioned up some oak, and ripped/ resawed my 2.5mm laminations. Stuck a zero clearance down with the hot melt glue gun (Jimmy Diresta tip) this helped a lot.... Good tip.

Image

Dropped some timber on my ankle, whilst digging about in the (messy) garage...!

Image

....

Bundles of joy. 7 laminations to get approx 18mm

The wife's hair bands keeping things together.... for test press

Image

Image

UF glue mix up, roller, bundle, hair bands back on, in bag press

Image

Cup of tea

Out of press, file off the UF glue, this stuff goes rock hard and can be quite sharp!

Image

Out of press and run over planner (naff knives in of course)...

Image

Bandsaw slightly over size...

Image

Then a quick nibble with the planner to tidy edges to final thickness...

Image

Made up the underside frame, with a special end detail to match the detailing from the existing large dining table (forgot to snap this making bit) ...here's the original to make sense of it... Even though the legs are in a different position now. (See OP)

Image

And this is as far as I've got... So far so good, quite pleased with the results... Except for the ankle bash bit (plonker!)

Cracking job, Jim.

BTW, they're scrunchies, not hair bands!

Did you get any degree of springback when the parts came off the form?

You are way ahead of me - my current project is putting the vacuum pump system together ready for some vac bagging.

I stand corrected...My wife litters the house with these things! I'm sure I'm therefore helping the (my) environment ...somehow, especially the domestic Hoover ;)

IKR...We're in the future? ...WHY... oh why.... do I still have 4 remotes? The devices are only a couple of years old (Freeview, HD TV, (cheapie) DVD, soundbar )

Any tips?

Some pics from this week...

Cutting tapers on the feet... Bit of a naughty practice with no crown guarding, but I was able to stand at the edge of the carriage out rigger, and it's a beefy hold down.

Domino cheating...

More Dominos, apologies not very traditional...

Just the top to do.

Seeing the laminated feet. Makes me wonder if a contrasting timber in there might have been an idea.

I like the generous arrises. Dominoes? Go and stand facing the corner with your hands on your head...... ;)

Can I come out from the corner now?

I agree - do love a bit of contrasting :eusa-dance: that would of worked nicely, originally the plan was to use a single piece for the feet sections...however as the client squeezed me (!) on price I've stuck with some 1" 1/4 stock I had (and dropped on my ankle) in the garage, rather than buying a a big lump of 3" and probably a 9 ft+ board. I popped the quarter sawn in the middle, to detract from / celebrate the laminations - should look quite neat when it's finished.

It's like that here - even on a Saturday or Sunday. :P

When Mrs P returns from work (she works most weekends), I feel I should stand to attention...

"All present and correct Ma'am!"

"What would you av me do now Ma'am?"

"Yes Ma'am!"

"On the double Ma'am!"

Back on duty ...woof!... The top is done. Here's how it went..

Boards joined and edged, dinged my new knives on a nail FFS! Fortunately on an outer edge...
Image

Biscuits and glued in two halves, didn't want to attempt the lot with the 5 min PU... It's still a rush on in this heat though!
Image

Then the two halves...Image

Clean up and whizz round with a totally under powered router...in hindsight and now dizzy from all the climbing passes, it would of been better to jigsaw up to the line and clean with the 1/2" router... being a bit lazy! Image

Clean up and round over to under side edge

Image

Image

Now... I'll be honest ...It's a little twisty as a dry fit, hopefully the glue up will tighten things up... Or I'll have to come up with some clever engineering, though that would be easier to do before glue up.

It's a bit of a gamble.

I'm fitting the alcoves to match the mid century desk over the next two days, so will give it some thought over the weekend before committing to a glue up. I'd be interested to hear any thoughts on said twist.

In the mean time I'll clamp some battens to the top, to stop it going bananas!
