Maple & Ebony Bedroom Furniture - FINISHED

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Maple & Ebony Bedroom Furniture - FINISHED

Postby Pinch » 26 Jul 2017, 20:05

I've recently taken a deposit on this project; 5 pieces of furniture for a bedroom. The brief was light wood, elegant and simple with function, so I came up with these, although these are revised but very similar to the original design.

The dressing table is going to be interesting, including a fold down mirror integral to the top which when fully opened, will serve as a mirror (obviously) and also give access to a two compartment well located below, where the lady's hair dryer and other female bits will live.

It doesn't quite have the same ring as a 'man drawer'.

Also includes a 2.7mm ebony string inlay to all the top surfaces. Wood is on order.

Interesting, I take it the dressing table fits into a corner?

You don't half get some interesting projects mate and come up with some lovely designs.

Another one I'll be following closely.

Maple and ebony sounds a good combination if the ebony is used for the 'accent' detailing...it could look a bit OTT if there's too much of it. My two euros, not that they're worth much now :D - Rob

Thanks Mark, yep, I'm still waiting for that commission to carve a full size version of the client's dog. Just hope it's not a Great Dane! Could be worse I suppose, the wife of the house might want a full size carving of her husband.

Thanks Andy - indeed. It's come in on good timing. I should have been starting a different project after the bench, but that was postponed a couple of weeks ago until later in the year. There is another project almost in the bag which should have been concluded about a month ago, but some people take a lot of time and I never pressure them - maybe a polite email saying "Oi, do you want me to make your desk or not?"

But, I'm quite fortunate as I always have 'hospital jobs' with the landlord of my shop - the farmer chap. I have some oak joinery to make for him sometime soon he hopes. He's very cool though and in 5 years, I've probably done 5 jobs for him all of which he calls 'hospital jobs'. 8-)

I'm also in the middle of pricing up another desk in African walnut, but my gut feeling it's going to be far too expensive for the clients. :|

Thanks Rob, yep, totally agree with you. I've used ebony string in maple before and it was just about the right balance for that particular piece. This one will be similar. 8-)

It's been a while since I posted up any work - I've been very lazy. :eusa-shifty:

I'm delivering this project tomorrow in two cars as I had to sell my van.

I'm selling the Jag now as well.

I also broke the roof on my Beemer.

Now looking for a Pug 407 estate. :P

Right then... no WIP (as I wrote earlier - been too lazy) so straight in with the finished work.

Here are all five pieces in the shop.

And now the photo shoot.

And the Bedside Tables.

That's it folks.

I'm back in the shop tomorrow for some more lazy miserableness.

I might go into semi retirement and be a jobbing handyman.

Either that, or start busking on the streets. :eusa-think:

Where are my thpoonth....

What lisp.

The above was designed and made as per brief. Hope the clients like tomorrow.

Next job... an unusual desk. Not design, just the mixture of woods. I'm not sure if it's going to work, but we'll see.

Beautiful! The tops in particular. Not so keen on a corner table, but nonetheless, it's still lovely. I'd have loved to have seen the stringing being done, you lazy so-and-so! :) Get your camera out, and keep it out......

Oh, and they're going to plonk a TV and Sky box on those tops, are they? ........Heathens........

Very nice Paul I particularly like the small tables with drawers :eusa-clap:

There’s a lot to be said for jobbing handyman, very little stress, short well paid jobs that give you time to do the things you want.

Good stuff Paul. H'ellegant it is :D A small point that occurred to me in looking at the pics (and it's probably me being nit-picky) is the interior stay for the mirror top...looks a bit 'clumpy' to me, though obviously does what it's supposed to. I wonder if something gucci in brass would have worked equally as well?

Also, will there be a cushion or soft top on the stool?...could be a bit hard on the sit bones and I know all about them 'cos I've just got a new Brooks leather saddle for the high wheeler  - Rob
