Malc's Picture viewing problems

I didn't start with the brace, despite what the photos suggest, but made the simple beam, with a tenon on the end and a mortise. You'll see a piccie in a minute, but first, this is me setting out the curve for the brace:

It's only just over 2" thick, so I was able to persuade my bandsaw to co-operate to cut out the curve:

Gents, Mods,

I have a problem viewing Mike's images on both my Mac Mini and my iPad. The mini has a blue rectangle with a question mark in it. The iPad has a rectangle with the word image in it.

Any ideas?

Malc,

Mike host his picture on imgur - a normally reliable hosting site.

Investigating odd behaviour always starts the same way. Go to "quote" on the misbehaving post and then you can see the links. In the case of photos, extract the bit between the image tags, open a new browser window or tab and paste the link in and see what happens.

When you return to the quoted text and have finished, select back NOT submit.

In this case mike first photo is here https://i.imgur.com/SflKJ31.jpg?1

If you can't see it then there is a conflict between your browser and Imgur - nowt to do with the forum software.

Thanks, Bob.

It was worth the faffing around the get there and see Mike's progress.

Can I confirm, the problem is the image hosting site if I can eventually see the images after doing what you told me?

Thanks.

Malc, Mike's photos work fine on my iPad iOS 10.3.3 & Safari.

Always worth clearing history and engineers reset (power off and on).

Not really but this is where my knowledge runs out  .
As Andy says it is always worth trying a few things at your end when it is clear that the problem is not affecting everyone. History and cache clearing can work wonders!

I do note that the ending of Mikes links are a bit strange. Instead of ending .jpg, they are .jpg?1 which I don't understand. Recently I have learned that .jpg~original can be a fix for many photobucket lost pics and I don't understand that either.
My brain is getting left behind

Bob, Andy,

While desperately trying not to hijack Mike's thread, I'm one of those who like to know how stuff does or doesn't work. I'm typing this on th iPad. I've copied the img details of one image into a new tab, got the imgur photo, gone back to WH2 and lo, there they all are!

I did the switch off first, but that didn't work, and I wouldn't know how to clear the cache on the ipad.

Once you have successfully view a pic by what ever means, it will be in your local cache for a certain period and so subsequent times you refer to that pic, it will be fetched from the local cache rather than being requested anew from the interweb.

So this can affect the results of testing such as you have done.

Clearing the cache on safari (certainly my iPhone) is a no options, blunt instrument and I've steered clear of it as it looks like it might jeopardise stored links, favourites maybe even bookmarks. Entering URLs on an iPhone is such a PITA, I'd rather live with the issues.

Thanks, Bob.

I still don't know where I am with this.

I suppose I should be thankful that I've accessed the images, but I would like to somehow prevent it recurring.

Never mind. If anyone else has any ideas, that'd be great.

Are you able to see Mike's earlier pictures on those devices now?

Given that I can see all of them on my iPhone and Andy can see them on his Apple platforms and no one else is complaining of not seeing the pics in what is our most followed topic, then it rather suggests the issue is with your devices.
Are you running safari on both? Is it up to date? - clutching at straws......

That's a useful combination of excuses Andy.
A long time ago I resigned myself to not expecting to always understand the female of the species and expect surprising interpretations of intent and only made significant relationships with those of a generous and forgiving nature.
Seems to have worked pretty well!

Yes, I have UTD Safaris on both devices and I can see them on both devices now after just putting one image url code into a new browser tab and then going back to the original post.

That's because of the way Safari works. It will pre-fetch all the images as I understand it (which, incidentally explains why sometimes it seems very slow). So when you access the Imgur website I think it is possible that Safari has downloaded in the background all the photos and stuck them in cache. So when you then g to view the photos via the forum thread they appear to be OK.

To prove my theory, delete Safari cache on your Mac Mini. You should be able to do just the cache as opposed to the whole lot, history, cookies etc, as Bob correctly says, if you are doing this on an iPhone.

Then view the image using the direct Imgur link.

Go back to Safari and view the thread. Images should be there.

Delete the Safari cache again. View the image using the direct Imgur link. Delete Safari cache. Now view the thread. I think you will find that the images aren't there.
If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door.

I activated the developers menu in the menu bar and emptied the caches.

Well, then it sort of happened again with Mike's recap. It had the 2 images that he had earlier shown. But the 3rd and subsequent images were just question marks.

I did the quote thing again and pasted the img url code of one of the last images into the browser address and nothing changed.

I went back and pasted the img url of the 3rd image, and then went back to Mike's post (reminds me of the name of an American TV Theme composer!) and lo, there they all were again.

I've emptied the cache again and will now have to wait for mikes next update.

Just opened Mike's post today and got the same problem.

Same solution, though.

Got hos post, 'quote' copy image url, open new tab and paste url, open image.

Go back to Mike's post and my 'quote'.

Back page once. Then reload page and they are there!

So why?

It looks like either a problem with your computer accessing Imgur or just maybe an issue with your isp and Imgur?
Have you got access to a PC and try that and if that fails try someone else's PC on their isp and then your computer on their network to try and work out the problem in logical steps.

It's all working down here in deepest rural France on both iPhone and PC and was fine at home.

Any unusual firewalls in the way at your end maybe? Try turning those off just as an experiment.

How about an enquiry to Imgur help?

Malc,
I thought I would post an image via imgur to see if you can see it.
A difference that I can see with Mike's images is that his string starts https. Mine are just http. No s. At the moment I cant see how to get the s. Paid for service perhaps?

So an open question. Is that fact that Mike;s image strings starts https rather than http causing Malc's problems?

The s means secure or encrypted so perhaps Malc's security settings ( in or around Safari) are set to block https. Is this likely?

Malc do you fancy trying Firefox?

I run both firefox and safari on the iMac and swap between the two as soon as a website does not play ball - sometimes happens when form filling. I do only use Safari on the iPad but I do not have your image viewing problem.

Hope this is not confusing you. Please shout if you need a more tech savvi person to rubbish my thoughts.

I'm less bothered about thread hijacks than almost anyone on the entire interwebthingy. Nonetheless, for future reference (ie finding this thread later), a split into a new thread was clearly a sensible step.
