Display Case / Drinks Cabinet (Complete)

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Ha, thanks Bob... Honestly, I'm making it up as I go along

If anyone spots a clanger, however daft, do say as I'm sure to be blissfully unaware and it'll be very much appreciated

Would be be less risky to ebonise the wood?
I do not think therefore I do not am.

I'm after a heavy texture by brushing out the burnt (soft) summer wood grain. It can take quite few applications to ebonise with a dye. I remember doing some Oak chairs in a Macintosh style and it was a bit of a chore.

I'll be using a dye post brushing tho, the samples came out really black. The shou sugi ban technique is suppose to perform quite well with UV too, as well as being fire resistant and insect proof, quite clever really.

Here's a disco picture of the lighting, switched with a PIR on/off sensor

I went through a short phase of torching stuff. It was quite addictive at the time,no waiting for stain to dry. I had a large area to cover so stocked up on gas bottles. A little goes a long way cause I didn't even empty the first one.
Looking great, look forward to seeing the next instalment !

Plunging that router in for the first time, and hoping it didn't kick a mm off line..........oh boy....... BIG nervous moment!

Did you use a spiral downcut cutter?

That's such a nifty simple jig for doing the stringing. I'll be borrowing that idea, nice one !

Thanks Chaps, very kind. :)

Here we go, some footage, a little wobbly trying to multi-task, but hopefully you get the jist.

We're all scorched, brushed out, vacuumed and dye'd with Liberon's 'Ebony'.

Off to see my Rhumatologist, hopefully he/she won't spoil what so far has been a successful day :obscene-drinkingcheers:

No plunging, just ran straight into the material (gingerly!) A standard two flute 6mm. I umm'd & err'd about it, I did consider a grooving bit on a bearing, though I feel that definitely would of given me some break-out, unless I backed it out (difficult) or (bonkers) reverse cut it, which in itself would of been too much of a handful and the router would have no doubt taken control!

I pre-fininshed the edge, which helps a little and also keeps the Black Ebony dust out of the Sycamore grain (re: cross-contamination).

Nice looking, Jim.

I did that burning finish on a small piece I made during my A Level course in 1967, but I was only allowed to use a school bunsen burner.

Your burner.......now that's what I call a burner!!

Well, I'd be breathing a huge sigh of relief. That's two big steps which could have wrecked a lot of work: grooving for the inlay, and barbecuing your legs. Well done.

They look great ! It's gonna be something really special when it's finished

When I burnt mine I used the same process except for the ebony stain. When I applied some oil it looked o.k,but with a browny tinge on oak. Is it the flame for mainly the texture then and the dye to make it consistently black ?

Defo an outdoor job with that flame thrower :) . Thanks for juggling the camera and showing us how, although not something I will be trying anytime soon.

Thanks Coley. TBH.... What I'm trying to achieve with the torch is grain definition and texture (after brushing out) and a reasonable amount of darkening to start things off... It definitely needs the ebony dye to bring it to Black otherwise after brushing you do get brown streaks which in his own right is quite an interesting finish.

I did say worts n all...a drying check popped out, probably aided by the BBQ session... I've oiled the legs, and they're looking nice. It's more an aesthetic than a structural thing, not sure whether to epoxy or conceal with a a bit of back wax stick.

What do you chaps think?Image

I would be tempted to fill/glue it in some way just for fear of it spreading over time.

I'd try and get a small amount of epoxy in there using a vacuum bag for reinforcement and then experiment with physical fillers to maintain the colour/texture other wise there is a risk of highlighting rather than disguising the problem.
