Gluing-up the curved door rails yesterday... Until I most joyfully discovered the end-of-day-balls-up this morning!....a classic example of why 'overtime is a waste of time' Poodles!

Anyone spot it?ImageImageImageImageImage

Not sure but is that the outer veneer is too short or has slipped in the cauls?

Stupidly I only put in three 5mm ply laminations instead of four... Though you're right Bob the components do skid about a bit. Plenty of over-hang. About 100mm each end.

Key to keep the laminations as level as possible with the bottom of the jig, tapping all the laminations down to the clamps and checking the jig isn't twisted on the bench... a whizz over some old planner knives and rip to width on the bandsaw before using the template to mark out the rail cuts.

A tip I picked up but only tried once was to sprinkle a little salt on the wet glue. Just enough to get the surfaces to grip.

Interesting idea. I think I'd want to hear from a chemist before I relied on that in an important glue-up.

I've seen sand suggested but a bit concerned with grain size keeping the joint apart with hard wood.

That's looking really smart ! How did you finish off the bottom of the laminated ply rails ?

Thanks Coley, I've left as Ply, as it's out of the eye line. Though you could tape some veneer on. A nicer and more involved method would be to laminate maple bandsaw rips.

Oh i see. I was scratching my head wondering if you were gonna tape it afterwards. When you say maple bandsaw rips, I guess you mean instead of the ply ? Would ply be better anyway because it's more stable ? Sorry for the daft questions keep the pictures coming

No problem .... It's faster in the Ply, saving lots of machine time and importantly the thickness is more likely to be consistent... There's the potential for slight drift when band sawing. You could also use thin MDF.

Made curved table aprons in Oak rips, more to play with the bandsaw. Any movement will be in the width, but I doubt they'll be any as they're full of glue

Fingers crossed for you with the torching. I do think black legs will frame that cabinet nicely.

+1 However I do wonder how easy it will be to get a clean hard line between the blackened legs and the cabinet body.

My gut reaction would have been to seal up to the line from the cabinet side with whatever lacquer/varnish etc with masking tape and then apply a black stain to the legs but maybe I'm just a coward

Good Luck

I don't quite understand, Bob? Finishing with the legs in place?

I'll be removing the legs to torch, the face of the legs that meet the cabinet has been milled flat (22mm) you can just see it here.Image

Ah! I was confused seeing it assembled thinking it was glued up already.

I knew really that you knew what you were doing
