Oak veneered panel

Postby Doug » 25 Sep 2017, 11:03

I don’t usually bother veneering panels as they are so cheap to buy but this week I need an Oak panel for a job that has to be less than 4mm thick, my supplier couldn’t come up with one this thickness so my only option was to make one.
I’ve used 1.5mm plywood on to which I’ve glued 1.5mm Oak veneer, the leaves were around 120-130mm wide so I started by straightening the edges with them bundle together & clamped to the work bench.

i then ran the bundle through the bandsaw & repeated the same planing process until I was happy with the fit

the only tape I had was some 2” frog tape so I used this to hold the leaves together which enabled me to turn it over in one piece to apply the glue

As I don’t have any fancy veneering gear after I’d glued the veneer to the 1.5mm ply I placed a cupped piece of 22mm ply on top of the panel & clamped it all to the bench using cupped off cuts of timber as cauls

I was really pleased with the results, this is the panel after it’s firs coat of hard wax oil

:text-+1: Yep, nice job. I've just put a back panel (smaller than this one) in the AirPress with an electrickeral blanket and old duvet over the top. Gives some additional heat and reduces the time in the bag. I use really stretchy 3M tape laid at 90deg to the grain, so when it's pulled righty tighty the glue line becomes invisible...provided it's been shot in correctly :eusa-pray: - Rob

Looking good Doug. Is that the Veritas shooting board plane?

Thanks for the comments,

It is the Veritas shooting board plane Neil.

Andy It’s an end panel for a row of kitchen base units, a builder had removed part of the kitchen to cut through a doorway, in doing so he left hardly any over hang on the worktop & the MFC end panel didn’t match the oak kitchen so stuck out a mile.
I’ve since glued this panel to the unit & it looks so much better.

Nicely done Doug. I like veneer work - it's relaxing. 8-)
In my previous life, I was a tree.
