The original cabinet was made from old school desks over thirty years ago when we lived in Romney Marsh. It was OK at the time and has served us well three decades, but it was time for something a bit more stylish.
The shovetails were a little bit crude and I never managed to make the final shelf support so there was always one missing . The laminated handle was also far to big and the shelves were just lumps of glass where I'd taken off the edge with a diamond stone, so all in all it had been grating for some time.
The replacement is still in oak but slightly bigger. Construction is 2mm thick quarter sawn bookmatched veneers over 15mm mr mdf, with 6mm lippings applied afterwards, domino'd together. The back is again quarter sawn bookmatched oak veneers onto 4mm birch ply with mahogany balancer on the reverse side. The door is in solid 22mm thick oak; rails and stiles have again been bookmatched. There's no handle on this one but I've machined a finger pull recess along the opening edge. The door is again retained by a Krenovian spring loaded catch with an ebony button on the opposite shadow gap to maintain an equal distance. Finish is two coats of Osmo with wax over the top. Shelves are 6mm glass, ground and polished, 5mm holes in the sides made with the excellent Veritas Shelf Drilling jig.
I went up onto the wall without a hitch or undue recourse to a 'tapometer' and the final pic shows it full of assorted glassware - Rob
