Martin Guitar Kit (It's First Public Outing!)

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Very nice mate. I don’t have a lot to offer by way of comments but I’m very much enjoying watching this thread unfold.
Cheers

Thanks, Mark.

It's nice to know people are following, especially when I go through challenging times in this build, which is most of the time! :D If you remember, I was trained on straight lines and square corners!

Thank you, Andy. Wow!

The No 2 guitar, the six string, when I glued the neck to the body 20 years ago, I made a right hash up of it and left two big gaps either side of the heel.

I'd been wondering for ages what to fill the gaps with. Yesterday, I had the mad idea of mixing the mahogany coloured water based grain filler with Titebond Original.

So last night I made up a mix and looked at this morning. It's set hard and mahogany coloured.

So, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I know it's a bit wet still, but I reckon when dry and with some delicate sanding, that'll look a darn site better that those gaps. :)

The weather calmed down this evening, so I was able to hang both guitars, No 2 whole, and No 3 body and neck, under the verandah roof and sprayed them with sanding sealer.

Now for a day or two of sanding with 400 grit before grainfilling both.

Good man! Stand by your bed!

Not a lot to show, just grain filling and rubbing down of both guitars.

More sanding sealer later in the week, followed by lacquering.

Grain filled (not very well) and 2 x washcoat sprayed (not very well), but I'm good at rubbing back with 400grit! :D

There will now be a summer break of a few weeks.

I have to set up a spraying schedule of 2 x days x 3 coats per day, followed by two days hardening, followed by another two days x 3 coats per day followed by 2 weeks curing/hardening. That also includes some light sanding in between some of the coats.

I've also got to jerry rig a spray booth under the verandah, because the guitars will have to stay under there because the cellulose will be too soft to carry in and rest somewhere in the workshop. And other work needs to carry on in the workshop.

Oh, and the grandchildren are coming to stay! :o

Hope all goes well. Will the humidity fluctuations while spraying outside be a problem? Plenty of storms forecast for most areas next week.

I shall delay starting the lacquer process for at least a couple of weeks. I'll try and rig up a spray booth where the polythene sides won't flap too much if it's windy. I shall have to think about getting a blush remover aerosol. I've had one blush episode already with the sanding sealer which I managed to sand out. I've got a moisture filter on the airline.

The grandchildren have been delivered back to their parents unscathed...as are we, almost! :D

While they were quiet, I spent a little time on the computer trying to develop a logo for the headstocks of these guitars.

Material Values is the name of the craft business that my sisters have been running for years with their exquisite hand sewn heirlooms. They kindly allow me to use the business name to promote, advertise or sell any of my woodcraft items.

I already have a label for the inside of the guitars designed 20 years ago.

For the logo I had a little vote online among my FB 'friends' and rellies for their choice.

I don't know how to make these images smaller on here, but the worded version is 40mm wide and the letters version is 30mm wide.

Here's a mock up.

It was a close run thing, but the FB community preferred the letters logo based on the fact that the name was printed on the label inside the guitar. I'm still in two minds and will have a practice run on the desk surface in front of me.

I am nowhere near skilled enough to make the logo out of abalone or Mother of Pearl or any other exotic materials and then have to inlay that shape into a routed identical shape in the headstock. So I shall be using waterslide transfers, and to use them, they have to be fixed before the lacquering regime which will go over the top of them. So that is this week's project.

The first mistake I made was to order laser print transfer sheets and I only have an inkjet printer. The second mistake I made was to order clear transfer sheets and any lightening of colour like the grey in the logos above, to simulate silver, uses the white of printing paper as my printer doesn't print white. The white backed sheets arrived through the post this morning.

I may not get the practice runs done today. Mission Control wants to visit a wool shop closing down an hour away, and I'm waiting for a call back from a vendor on FB of a machine I would like to buy.

I'm open to tips, gents.

This is the gold coloured letter logo on clear decal paper stuck to the desk in front of me.

IMG_4321.JPG
(391.19 KiB)

As you can see, the yellowy, goldy colour is translucent and doesn't show up well from it's pseudo woody background.

If I use the white decal paper, then I would have to cut around both the letter outlines and that would probably not work as the letters would become too flimsy to transfer.

I've done a practice run for a mate's guitar, he's covering a chinese logo with his name. The headstock is black so I've put his name on a black background.

IMG_4318.JPG
(318.46 KiB)

I could, for example place my two letter logo on a white circle with a black outline.

Any other ideas?
