Storage Box/Chest

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

I don’t think we can get Butternut here??
The carcass wood is Sycamore, a member of the Maple family. I cheated a bit in that the bottom panels are ply.
Difficult to find pure white so these pieces are classed as “dirty”.
I made this table a few years back from the same stash but picked out the better pieces.

I was going to paint it white (with the walnut top varnished) but the client now wants it all varnished as some pieces show off a ripple.
I’m still not too sure as the streaks will still show up as “dirty”??

Rob - probably Osmo PolyX if my tin of the stuff is still workable.
Got to seek out some soft closers and hinges now.

That may turn it the usual 'yellow' (for want of a more appropriate term). I've heard excellent reports about Osmo Raw which a lot of folk now use on Ash. The 'discolouration' using standard oil finishes is one reason that I haven't used ash in the past, but I may well do later on - Rob

Sycamore is much more bland than Butternut, as a tree its sometimes thought of as a weed - it springs up everywhere.
Mines a bit “dirty” and starting to spalt, “good” sycamore is all white.
I’ve decided to compromise - varnish the outside and paint the inside white. I can always paint the outside too if needed.

Here’s the pieces after one coat, still drying:

I fitted the hinges and some gas struts today.
The instructions were pretty carp and with a 50::50 chance of getting it wrong - I did!!

Struts fitted correctly - with hindsight perhaps should have used silver hinges??

And put a curve on the bottom rail??

Looks good Rod and I agree with your suggestion about silver coloured hinges; they would have tied in better with the other hardware. Retro fit some more hinges at a later date?

Also a curve on the bottom rail would lighten the overall appearance - Rob
