Kapex Station

Postby Malc2098 » 08 Jan 2019, 17:37

Looking online and especially at Peter Parfitt's channel, there are all sorts of lovely CMS station designs all over the net.

I don't think I've got the room to have those fixed stations, so I had to come up with a design of my own.

I also, like a lot of you, hate throwing wood or board away, and I brought with me to this house three huge benches I made way back from proper 3/4" ply, the pinky stuff. It's bloomin' heavy.

I also wanted to integrate the drawer cabinets that I had been making, so I made a carcass from the recycled 3/4" ply, fitted some casters to it and put it in the gap between the drawer cabinets.

Because it was from the recycled ply, I couldn't quite get it to the height I needed to accommodate the Kapex. So I added some thinner ply that I recycled from the tablesaw delivery case and some more 3/4" ply and curved that to accommodate the Kapex front foot.

And that got me plumb on!

All I need to do now is make a couple of drawers from the recycled ply and add them to the cabinet.

Very neat, Malcolm. Just be a bit wary of the two side cabinets going out of plumb if you move them in and out a lot.

I like your zero-clearance insert...must make one of those for mine.

Have you got the anle-dooberry thing ? No idea how to use it once it's on the saw

I might be tempted to mount all three cabinets on a single piece of ply/mdf, bolt them all together and move them as one.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

I made that ZCI 'cos you told me to!

Yes, I've got the bevel angle doobrey, but I've got no more dodgey corners left to mitre something for.

Because of their weight with the drawers full, they are fairly sturdy.

But I have a cunning plan!

If you can imagine the French cleat 45 degree sliced length of wood, well, I thought I could use that idea to slide the station in, and if the Kapex station has one side of the 45 and the drawer cabinet the other, then they'd pull each other together and act as one unit. And If I did that on both sides........

Thanks, Doug.

Making the Kapex cabinet has been tricky, because I'm using reclaimed ply from my old benches and few if any of the sizes match.

I've got two pairs of drawer runners off the old bench, a bit manky, but serviceable, but I'm struggling to make drawers from the sizes of ply I've recycled. I've had to use some leftover OSB to help make the drawers.

But, I'll get there somehow. :)

More to follow.

Hi Malcolm
Can I ask what height is the saw sitting at?

Michael, I'm indoors at the minute and the 'shop is up the top of the garden, but the heights of all the cabinets and the temporary bench have been built to about 3 to 5mm lower than the table saw.

That way, the whole space becomes modular and I can move any of the cabinets around and they match height with anything else, and double as an outfield table for the saw.

Everything is on casters of some sort.

I asked because I asked about bench height on a leather work forum for bench heights and we managed to work out most people had heights of around 38 inches or an inch above the belt line or 5inches above the shirt cuff. This is for detailed up close type work.
I don’t think my woodworking side needs to be so high but I thought I would start asking when I read your post.
I would appreciate your input next time you are in your shop.

I've taken a lot of trouble to make all my surfaces the same height.
This allows any nearby surface to be used as infeed/outfeed tables with the machines for long workpieces.

From memory the table saw on its mobile base but in the parked - feet down position, set the standard and the benches followed. The thicknesser has a motorised lift and the upper limit is set to stop level with the saw.
I think everything is about 900 mm.

Measure your kitchen cabinets as a guide - this is a working height that most people are comfortable with for standing applications. These range between 850 and 900mm typically, with most appliances being 840-850mm heigh to fit underneath them.

If you sit at it then higher might be easier eg scroll saw or craft work - then breakfast bar type islands tend to be a touch higher to get a stool and your knees underneath comfortably.

I made a couple of drawers from the old ply, the old runners and some leftover OSB from the build.

I've also used the French Cleat method of linking the three cabinets together.

Seems to be a bit of a conflict between the cleats and the castors to me.
Now if there were no castors on the middle section then the cleats would pull everything together?

You can't lift up either of the two side cabinets because the centre box cleats will be holding them down ?

Nearly. Sort of.

I had intended the design to be the middle cabinet to be the 'top' cleat, it being heavier than each of the other two. I had also intended the middle one to slide in between the others and the weight of the middle one forcing the cleats down into the outer ones, thus pulling them together.

All was going swimmingly, till the last one, the lower right as you look at it.

I got it the wrong way round and it was tight going in but I didn't realise I had it the wrong way round so carried on using it in. Now lifting the middle only goes and lifts up the right one, too! :eusa-doh:

We're at MiL's tomorrow doing odd jobs, so it's back on Sunday to sort it out.

But.....up until that time, the principle worked, and I'm pleased about that.

Not really, Mike. The plans for those cabinets came from a US site and they used one whole 8x4 of 17mm ply and just over half an 8x4 of 6mm ply. So each time I made two, I ordered 2 of 8x4 17mm and 1 of 8x4 6mm and stopped the back board about 4" early, otherwise there would have been a large waste of 6mm ply.

The US plans also used 3/4" ply, so all dimensions had to be adjusted to cater for the different with 17mm.

I agree, Bob. But due to the relatively small space in my 'shop, I want the option of separating them and moving them around if I need to.

I buy my casters from Coldene Casters and have used a couple of different types. From what I can find out, they're all made in the UK.

The two side cabinets have a cheaper type of caster which has the four holed plate to fix it to the base. I have always used machine screws/bolts (whatever they're called) and tap the threads into the ply. I've never had one come off yet. (I found a cheap tap set that also included the correct sized drills for each of M3, M4, M5, M6 and M8.)

The Kapex station has a slightly dearer double caster that I used on my EB Planer/Thicknesser low profile carriage. These casters are bolt though and my bolts for the Kapex Station protrude into the box by about 20 mm. If I hade been rally tight for space, I could have sawn off the extra protrusion.

So I just made sure that the bottom of the drawer was higher than the bolt ends when I was fitting the bottom drawer.
