I had not expected to make anything in my small workshop until it was finished but when I was asked to help someone convert an antique small chest of drawers to hold fountain pens.
I am by no means an expert sometimes I wonder if I am actually proficient but there you go. In posting this I am asking for constructive criticism to help me to improve.
I don't have the drawers just measurements so I have decided to stay 2 mm clear of the sizes given Sapele was chosen as the original is mahogany.
I used the mitre saw to cut the timber to length and mitre the ends having already routed a channel for the base to slot into.

All 8 trays finished they are not perfect for some reason 2 are 1 mm smaller than the others I guess only I will see them all together like this as each one goes in a different drawer.

To get the diameter of slot required and the number of pens per tray I had to remove some material from the edges that would become the back and bottom. So pleased I listened to those who suggested I get a bandsaw.

I am going to lay fine suede over this wooden insert I have made but it is not quite smooth enough yes I could spend hours sanding it. but little lumps and bumps show through. I use this card and form it to the shape and apply the suede to it and then stick the card to the wood. It is a faff and takes time but it works.

I need a fool proof finish for the Sapele I was planning on waxing it but if anyone has a better suggestion I would appreciate it.
