Games & Card Table (complete)

Hello all,

Not posted for a while, got a little... hmmmpfh... with the Furniture Making tbh... Though after being on Dad duty most of the summer and an ice cream dent in the bank account... I'm now _very_ ready to get back to bashing in the shed - better for the mind too!

First up is a Card Table... there's a loose plan with a few unknowns. Plenty of veneers, curvy bits and some marquetry to the removable top.

I've been self-learning Fusion 360 too... Here's a sculptural 3D model of the piece

... Viewable in a browser via the link

All being well, I'll share some pictures along the way - should be fun and (hopefully) entertaining.

Cheers,

Jim

Looks good. I think I’d like to see the whole of each playing card rather than just half though.

Good to have your expertise in the room Roger, especially after your fab dining table

Now that would be a marquetry challenge!

Looking at your previous work, Jim, you've never struck me as someone to be put off by a challenge. Design what you want and only then find a way to build it!

I like the sense of mystery, even mischief, of having partial cards showing.

I'm going to go against this and say I think the chopped cards gives it a real artistic flair that showing the whole cards wouldn't give. I REALLY like the look of the design on the left with the chopped cards. :eusa-clap:

Completely agree, I really like it as you have it now too.

I have no idea how much veneering and marquetry experience you have already but that looks to be a good challenge.
Maybe have a watch of one of Matt Cremona's recent videos where he and some other bloke showed how to create a radial veneer. I haven't done anything like that before (and likely wont) so it was interesting to see how the process is carried out.

Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing this progress.

Will

I like the look of this one as well but like Mark I'll go against the grain and mention that I don't like the cards at all; seems to make the whole thing overly fussy and there's enough contrasts as it is in the design - Rob

I think just the hearts, clubs etc may look good on their own without the “card”. Provided they’re not too big they could add a nice detail.

Rob and I seldom agree on design, but I agree with him on this. I think. Having said that, computer drawings can sometimes over-emphasise contrast, and a relatively muted version of the design might just in reality be great. I guess we'll find out in due course.

From your image the top comes off when in use, so the suits on the cover are merely for when the table is a table. You could always play with just that image - making the suits smaller, altering their position etc until you get a design you are happy with. If this is for you then design is personal preference, and as you are seeing - there are many alternative views on design!

Failing that just make multiple tops

Eeeee...looks like I've gone 'Marmite' again ... 'Art' creating conversation ... so far so good ;)

A little background on the design:

The customer was keen to have some marquetry on the top, as previous marquetry designs had got me the call.

TBH the previous marquetry work (from quite some time ago) was a tongue-in-cheek project
and part of 'Occasional Taboos', a solo / speculative 'cat-walk' exhibition, so I felt a little uncomfortable about chucking it in for the sake of marquetry ( I appreciate (some) but I'm not really a fan ), especially knowing I'd have to play it reasonably safe.

As part of the brief, when not 'in-play' the table is required to sit comfortably in it's formal setting and occasionally used as a place for light business work - but probably mainly with a scratchy ceramic parked in the middle :eusa-naughty:

The customer was quite specific on the octagonal shape and 'Play layout' with chip cups (it's a Bridge thing), They also wanted a pedestal design of which I presented some classic / modern designs...Mr & Mrs Customer are quite 'chaulk 'n cheese' / traditional Vs. contemporary here when it comes to design which can be a bit of a tightrope walk to the destination; hopefully this comes across in the final design.

No.'s 3&5 were leaders here, though I worked up the legs as I didn't want to be caught out with that spring/ boing business I had with the previous pedestal table if you remember!? :eusa-doh:

A couple of top designs were presented ( see below) with a nod to the table's inner function... but without too obvious a reference to the game...so hints and abstraction of the cards/ suits playful but safe/tasteful ( Andy P ). The quartering as a move away from it looking like a big PIE, creating a kind of twist effect to reveal the cards along with the drop shadow ( clean as an inlay rather than shading with 'hot sand' - iykwim) ...hopefully it's making sense, I can ramble and my concentration is awful at the moment

Side note similar thing...

The Customer is a fan of that mousey chap, you know the one, they have some beautiful front doors from the Kilburn workshop!

Marquetry was requested for a dressing table commission... spot the mouse?

(extra points if you know who Chris is too)

Almost, I think you got it, though not a 'stop'; it's resting on the inside frame, left hand side....it can move about and is the width of the frame work

Chris; (clue) he's 'behind' you Image

Hope all is well. A little update.

Week 1 : Jim Jnr got bad Croup, spent most of it in Leeds General Infirmary Thankfully better now, wasn't a fun week though.

Week 2: Foot work/ pedestal cruciform base complete; sans morticing for legs

A few pictures of the journey...

Image

Template work
ImageImageImageImage

Transferred to a more substantial jigImageImageImage

Veneering Burr Oak onto a 2x 18mm Birch Ply substrate.ImageImage

Rebate for Ebony string

Image

ImageImage

Little pile of failures ImageImageImage

Cutting coopered lippings square off jig

ImageImage

VisitorImage

Missed a few pictures here. Pre glue up, I mitres two sides then rail saw'd the 'X' symmetry line to get a perfect (well, good) meet, thinking I'd be forever on the mitre saw to get them bang on. The segments are Domino'd together.
Image

Ebony bullseye (in my excitement I forgot to take a few pics.) The hole is a 35 mm forstner...I used a guide bush and appropriate cutter (5mm, in my case) round a 50mm forstner template to cut the ebony plug.
Image

Final clean up, left square/ hex shaped till the end so there was a good registration to clamp to.
Image

Round over finished off to edge and part of bottom edge, to give the appearance of a foot and more presence; well that's the plan .... They'll be some screw adjustable feet too, which should (hopefully) emphasise this ImageImage

On with the legs next I think...
