Baby Gym - Owls are in use!

Baby Gym - Owls are in use!

Grandchild No 1 is expected in April!!

What to do for the nursery? I nicked this design lock stock and barrel off Keith Rag'n'Bone Brown with a few alterations, and insider info tells me the decor for the nursery will be elephants, so elephants it is, not dinosaurs.

I started with the legs and cross bar. The legs were milled out of some beech I had from an old table and the crossbar was from some pine dowel I had leftover from another job. Everything was rounded smooth.

I cut the head off a couple of tee bolts and tapped the ends of the dowel and used knobs from my jig kit to hold the legs to the dowel. There will be some cord tied to the lower end of the legs to stop them splaying.

Next job was to find some elephant clipart to copy as the shape for the elephants dangling from the crossbar. First I cut some on the bandsaw out of mdf.

Having adjusted the shape to accept the roundover cutter bearing around the legs and trunk. Then roundover the edges both sides on the router table.

(293.94 KiB)

Followed by making a hole in its middle to make it lighter and to add a coloured bead later.
IMG_3274.JPG
(294.02 KiB)

That seemed to work, now let's see if I can make four of them out of plywood. Having first drilled holes the same size as the bearing to facilitate the cutter following its nether regions! And stuck them all together with DST.

Bandsaw time.

Forstner time.

Roundover time.

It's now quite apparent that cheap carcass ply is not so good for small jobs like this and holes in the ply are evident. So, tomorrow, I shall see if I can do a suitable filler job before sanding, priming and painting them.

Cheers, chaps. It's exciting!

Anyone know where small quantities if good quality birch ply can be bought down here in the south west?

Thank you, Roger.

The bandsaw is a Sip 01489 14" that I bought at a Yandles event 20 years ago. They don't make it any more. Spares are rare in the UK. Just bought replacement tyres from the US.

Unless you have a timber merchant locally who will do part sheets, then eBAY the place to try.
The smaller the piece the higher the square foot price but half sheets are not too bad
Just found 12mm 1/4 sheet 4x2 £25 delivered here
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Birch-Plywoo ... j4jjfnbiHQ

Not too eye wateringly extorionate considering typical full sheet cost, cutting, carriage and convenience.

Definitely very nice project and work.

Will use the e'phant shape/idea for my serviette range of animals.

Nice one Malc and congrats. Are you tempted to make other animals and not just the elephants?
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Thanks, Andy.

Keith Brown did dinosaurs. The nursery decor is going to be elephants, so I am keeping with that theme.

I just went looking for elephant clipart on the net and looked for the simplest. My smallest BS blade is 1/4" so I still had to make adjustments to the shape to make my job easier.

I've got no plans for other animals unless a commission pops up! :)

Ebay is always my first port of call for nearly everything even if it is just to establish a market price datum to compare others.
Armed with a cost "to my armchair" I can assess other offers on a convenience/cost basis.

I've spotted quarter sheets of birch ply at Yandles before now, tucked up into in a corner of the woodshed on the rhs as you enter. Not sure if they have a huge selection of thicknesses though - Rob
