Walnut Display Cabinet

Postby Pinch » 21 Sep 2014, 17:07

Hello All,

I think I may have posted some pictures of this cabinet during the chapter of TWH1. I'm posting again because I have just taken some new photos of the cabinet earlier today.

I designed and hand made this cabinet for my grandmother back in 1994 at 29 years of age. The finish is hand applied shellac. I also wrote a poem which is a part of the cabinet's journey and is safely in an envelope. When my gran passed on 15 years ago, the cabinet started the second leg of its heirloom journey in my parents' house. Since my mother has recently redecorated her living room, the cabinet has now been moved from the dining room into the living room. I thought it looked so good in its new resting place, I decided to take some new pictures of this 20 year old cabinet - wearing very well too.

I wrote an article in an old woodworking magazine 'Traditional Woodworking' back then and it also won a 2nd place prize in an international woodworking competition.

I know it's not going to be everyone taste in cabinetry, but this was originally for my grandmother and most of her furniture was classical and in walnut.

This work is 20 years old this year and although there are a few minor knocks and scratches, it's still looking pretty good.

The year '1994' is boxwood inlaid into walnut.

And of course, my old name plate 8-)

I guess one day, this cabinet will start its third leg of journey in my home, ready for me to pass onto one of my children.

Anyway, thought I'd share this with you - as it's Sunday :)

Cheers,
8-)

Oh bloody hell, I'm giving up! The quality of your work Paul is amazing. How did you do those feet especially the sticky-out bits?

Cheers Roger. The legs, feet and scrolled brackets were hand carved 8-)

Cheers Dave. If memory serves correctly, the winning piece was a magnificent Charles II chest with barley twist legs and heavily inlaid with elaborate marquetry. 8-)

Paul

You are right, it will not be to everyone's taste, but IMHO quality and workmanship never go out of fashion. It is a beautiful piece of furniture, I am sure your grandmother was delighted with it and no doubt all the more so because you made it for her.

Impressive piece. Like your recent desk, chair and cabinet it oozes quality.

Think I'm seeing some familiar design elements too :)

The thing is, the cabinet is a perfect match to the contents. It wouldn't look right with other stuff in it.

Thanks Robert. Yes, the design elements are very similar to the maple suite. My clients liked this walnut cabinet which is where the inspiration for the maple suite kind of started. I like classical furniture and I love making it. 8-)

Thanks Kirk. You're probably right, but then some modern and classical stuff can work well together. Probably more the other way round - modern furniture with classical ornaments. I'm sure one of my previous lives has left an indelible print in my mind. 8-)

One day, maybe one day I might be able to turn out somting near to that (finger, legs and everything crossed). Thank you for sharing. :obscene-drinkingbuddies: :obscene-drinkingbuddies: :text-bravo: :eusa-dance:
