Bird shed

A friend of my ExSWMBO was in need of a new bird table, after her's got blown over and smashed. The base and stand was ok. I've been toying around with the idea of making a bird table with a difference for quite a while, and came up with the idea of making a scaled down shed, a sort of scale model, using studwork, horizontal cladding and a slate roof. I was going to use some off-cuts of rubberoid, but I had some off-cuts of welsh slate which I think adds a bit of class. And I needed something relative easy to do whilst off from work with a proplapsed disc. Plus there's the added bonus of the mind-altering neural painkillers making things awkward.

All the wood used is from old pallet boards i've dismantled and de-nailed, and cut to size using my table saw (with the lovely new cross-cut sled) and the bandsaw.

Some rough working drawings were made first:

And from that studwork panels made:

To which the horizontal cladding was glued and nailed, using tiny model making brass nails:

Once the glue had set (the next day), the panels were trimmed using the bandsaw and assembled:

A base was constructed by glueing 3 cut lengths of pallet boards together, and to that a raised edge was glued and screwed (to keep bird seed on the table):

The assembled shed was then nailed to the base, and a sheet of slate with pre-drilled holes fixed to it using copper nails:

Finally, the shed and it's base was screwed to the existing stand, and some brass hooks added:

Very pretty but a couple of comments:
Birds are very messy and you need to be able to clean it easily.
I cannot see any drain holes for rain water - I would have left gaps at the side?

Here's one I made:

But the main feeding station is this one:

Don't know what the birds will make of it but it is certainly different and I like it.

Do they get a workbench to go inside?

I like that Fred. Your eyes must be better than mine, and your fingers smaller, to be working with those tiny model-making tacks.

Forgot to mention, I drilled some holes for water drainage, one in each corner.

And i've got a large but small collection of tiny bent brass tacks.

Thanks for the comments chaps :)

I didn't put a workbench inside. Those birds make enough noise first thing in the morning!

Love it :D

Lot of effort for such a small thing but exactly the kind of thing I would do, just because! :obscene-drinkingcheers:

So Fred just how many of those plan killers did you take to get started on this?
Nice job, don't think the birds I'll realise the work that has gone in to it.

Dave
