Raised garden bed, log cabin style - nearly finished

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Raised garden bed, log cabin style - nearly finished

Postby Andyp » 27 Jul 2020, 15:13

Here are the first two 1m long end pieces, resting on my test pieces of a few weeks back.

I so wish that I had stripped the bark while it was still wet, after less than a month it is now PITA to strip it off.

I can’t quite get my head around what size gap there will between the courses. I suspect the largest of those knotty bits will need cutting back.

To strip the bark, mark up and cut both ends of one board took 90 mins.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

First row completed. I forgot not to cut out the lower notch on the long sides so those two pieces will now become the 2nd or 3rd row. Using a bark spud to remove the bark is now near impossible, it is dry and stuck solid. Local boot fair tomorrow so I will try and find a drawknife called a "plane de charron" here which more literally translates to wheelwrights plane which to me is a spoke shave!

Thanks Malc, not fine woodwork and due to the size of those boards I have to work outside but fun nonetheless.

This chap might have some good value ideas for de-barking.

I had to take the workshop outside to straighten a few edges

Very pleased with the result

Here is the finished, as far as construction in concerned, raised bed.

The inside will be lined with a waterproof something to keep the soil away from the wood. The ends will be left open with a large gauge mesh to stop the soil falling out. I will probably raise up the sides on blocks too.

I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was. As always sharp blade and a not too fast feed rate were key.
