Project Merlin

Postby Pinch » 10 Feb 2021, 13:26

Hello Folks - hope everyone is well. 8-)

This is going to be a time consuming and interesting woodworking project, which I have recently resurrected from years ago and started afresh.

Twenty years ago, I was working from home on the drawing board full-time, designing/preparing Planning & Building Applications for clients. This included building projects from small domestic/commercial extensions to one-off bespoke designer houses. I stopped doing this work through 2010 and ventured into full-time furniture making.

During this time, I had my own dream of designing & building a bespoke oak framed Tudor styled house for myself, which I code named 'Project Merlin'. I completed the preliminary drawing work and started to build a 1:10 scaled model. My busy professional life at the time gave me little time to spend on Project Merlin, and consequently over time, it became a distant memory.

The partially built model ended up under a large bench in my old workshop gathering lots of dust. When I closed the workshop doors for the very last time during 2018, I left loads of stuff behind including the incomplete model of Project Merlin.

The old drawing negatives are still in my parents’ loft bound together in a large roll with many other drawing negatives. Over the last few weeks, I have re-designed and prepared a new set of 1:50 drawings using Microsoft Publisher – quite different to the old traditional A0X drawing board, but thoroughly enjoyable, nonetheless.

I have designed this project to actual measurement and scale with traditional construction methods as if it were going to be an actual full-scaled build, but of course, this is only going to be a scaled model of probably 1:12 or 1:15. If this were a full-size build, it probably wouldn’t meet with the current Building Regulations Fire Safety & Means of Escape, but it isn’t a full-size build. I thought I would mention that bit in case anyone asks.

The drawings are self-explanatory, although the sectional elevations look busy and require a bit of studying to see what’s what. If I make the model at 1:12, the actual size will be approximately 666mm wide x 1358mm long x 783mm high.

I'm going to make the model using pine, balsa and some sheet material. I'm also contemplating whether to actually craft the traditional joints in the pine framework, which will simulate the heavy oak frames. Hmmm, I might not, but certainly thinking about it.

I hope you like the proposed build – Project Merlin. :D

I've prepared another Second Floor Plan showing the Guest Bedroom ensuite, but undecided at the moment, which is why this version doesn't show one.

Thanks Bob. Haha, indeed. Mrs P has already made a few sarky comments, one of which went, "You're obsessed with naked ladies and pert bosoms - your creations always include a naked lady with pert bosoms!" To which I replied, "Yes... and...?"

I shall enjoy it and make it an ornamental feature in our home. I'm going to install a circuit of lighting as well. 8-)

Not sure. Haven't got anything on paper like Pinch but have dreams of building my own house and imagine a model may be as close as I get.

Thanks Mark. 8-) Yep, it's going to be something special, hopefully.

I can't see me returning to coach touring until next year, if at all. Although my old job is still open, the industry is broken. It might have been a very short lived career change. But, I'm keeping busy with things and now this wonderful project. I'm also thinking about creating a new website for Planning & Building Apps again. 8-)

Lost in space perhaps. It's so frustrating when that happens. My PC is on a serious 'go slow' at the moment - it drives me completely bonkers. :P

Haha, funny you mention that, I was seriously considering a chimney stack, but decided against it. You got me thinking about it again. :eusa-think: 8-)

Thanks Andy. 8-) Ah yes, the workshop. My original plan years ago was to include the workshop actually in the house as one huge open room together with living. I've always fancied having my cars in the living space as well. Imagine that, parking your cars in the living room - very cool. 8-)

have you got GOOD internet security. unusual go slow can often be other hackers using your machine to compute their stuff.
Or you could just have too much background stuff running.

Interesting project, I look forward to seeing how you get on. One observation, if it goes very well you may wish you’d used Oak. On the other hand, if it doesn’t you’ll be glad you used Pine! They sell some nice Hemlock in the form of stair spindles in Wickes ...

Cheers Bob. Yep, I already have this Bookmarked on my PC from a previous episode a few months ago. I'm going to go through the list again. I've noticed on here in particular, my PC takes ages to acknowledge after I've clicked the 'Submit button'. :|
