Scraper shave

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Scraper shave

Postby Pete Maddex » 03 Apr 2021, 19:10

Hi Chaps

Knocked this up today its a scraper shave in rosewood and maple, it was tricky as my metalworking lathe is blocking the access to my face vice, but with some clamps and a length of ply as a plaining stop I did it.
The blade was cut from an old hardpoint saw.

I think it will need a brass ware plate on the maple block, but it works very well.

Thanks Tony.

No job in particular, I do love spokeshaving stuff so a scraper shave for finishing and difficult wood is a good tool to have.

Rounded base on is next.

I’m looking at some of the ‘tools’ I have ‘just knocked up’ and they don’t look anything like those! Amazing.

Thanks Dave

I did use the flat bottomed scraper on the convex handle curves, the ripple was playing up with my spokeshave but the scraper shave tamed it a treat.

Very nice indeed. That maple looks lovely.

I bought a big block of figured sycamore on a bit of a whim the other day and need to decide what to do with it. I hadn't thought of tools...

Lovely stuff, Pete, as to be expected from you. :eusa-clap:

I do love a scraper shave, because you really need nothing more than wood and a bit of old saw blade and you can make a tool. And once you've made one tool, well... tool making should come with a health warning really!
