Protective film for exterior metal hinges

Postby RogerS » 14 Nov 2023, 10:18

I've got some large vintage gate hinges that have been cleaned and derusted.

Any recommendations as to some clear protective coating ? I had thought about some Rustins Plastic Coating, as I've got some, but that says internal wood.

A spray finish would be ideal.

I used Jenolite rust shield on a customer's garage door hinges a few years ago and it seemed to last well Roger. There are probably other brands and maybe a zinc galvanize spray as an alternative but you might have to paint over as it leaves a grey finish.
I have a degree in faffing about (It must be true, my wife says so)

Thanks Bob. Jenolite sounds the biz.

Once you have given it the best chance with the jenolite/ zinc primers/paint etc there will still be places where the coating will wear off. I would cover it all in Waxoyl but if you don't have any then chainsaw bar oil painted on will possible help. Recoat at the end of the dry season.

It only needs to last until Spring hopefully ;) 8-)

Jenolite ordered. Means I can get the cellar gate out of the indoor 'paint shop' aka one of the front reception rooms.
