Oh b****r

Today was one of those chore days as the weather was wet. On the list was to oil lightly the hinges on the door to the downstairs loo. I was very careful to use only a smidgeon but (and I'd never have expected it) opening and shutting the door to work the oil in made it squirt out under pressure. All over a twee little door that I made from elm to cover the mains stop cock.

I'd decided not to apply any finish to it as I didn't foresee anything contaminating it and I much prefer the look of natural wood. To say that I am gutted is an understatement. I will leave it to dry for a week or so as anything I do now while it's 'wet' will only make things worse, I reckon. Of **** it.

Looks like it might need to be finished in the Norm style.

I reckon you'll need to use some more oil of some description to even up the finish. Cant see it fading enough as those oil stains are mighty persistent. A darker more uniform finish would still be preferable to spot stains though don't you think? I would have thought anything would do from the oil finishing cupboard (tung, Danish, linseed etc)

woodshavings soaked in white spirit and covered in plastic sheet then left on my drive for a couple of days took all of the oil stains off of my drive. Might work on a door.

If it doesn't then at least it will lighten the stains.

I like that idea, Robert. Maybe use sawdust?

I just emptied the shop vac into a bin bag and poured in some white spirit and shook the bag - so a mixture of dust and shavings. Any wood dust or chips will do.

it looks like a giant oil stain when you take the plastic off and clear away the shavings but the white spirit soon evaporates and (on concrete block paving at least) leaves a cleaned surface.

guess you could test the idea on a bit of scrap wood before committing...

Washing up liquid poured neat onto engine oil on block paving makes the oil miraculously disappear too (not just an urban myth, I promise I have done it myself and it works 100%). Not sure on timber but another potential option…

Cheers
