I may just have to reconsider Danish Oil !

A pet aversion. Until now.

Took delivery of some maple and ash worktop samples. Both beautifully pale woods and tricky to finish while keeping the natural colour. Turning them over revealed that they had been finished as you can see the bare wood alongside the odd bits underneath where the finish has ended. Not a lot in it, TBH. Virtually no yellowing.

So I rang the supplier up to ask what they used. Answer?

Rustin's Danish Oil. Ho hum.

Takes a few months for Ash to yellow Roger, but when it does it turns urine yellow!

I will have a look at what I used as the bed I made for my daughter is still nice and white compared to other finished Ash furniture in her room (Mark Wilkinson by the way, not made by me!).

Cheers

I'd be very interested because that has always been my impression.

Tung oil or Finishing oil every day of the week before Danish Oil on ash. IMO, of course.

Does the oil not make the ash go yellow though? That has always been my understanding TBH

Not like Danish oil does, Roger.

If you really want stale-urine-yellow, try linseed oil on oak.

I know this thread's a bit old now, but only just read it  What would you use on Oak to protect it but still keep the natural colour?

A water based acrylic varnish - most oils will darken it and probably give it a yellowish tinge?

I think light has a lot to do with the yellowing as well. If the finished tops have been stacked and kept in the dark the yellowing effect will be retarded, but after a few months in bright daylight, urine yellow here we come!
