I've just had a stark reminder about the effect of oily wood on finishes.
I laminated some offcuts to make a gift for a friend using brown oak, ash and some interleaved accent strips of iroko.
All went well until the finish of diluted PU varnish was taking ages to go from the dry but slightly tacky stage to hard enough to de-nib and re-coat. I thought initially that the workshop was too cold and so I brought it into the house but still taking ages. After a couple of days if I gently rub my finger across the different woods, it is the iroko that is still slightly tacky.
Moral of the story is that I should have wiped the sanded surfaces over with acetone but completely forgot.
On the grounds of "no photo so it did not happen" this is what I'm making (a mess of!).
It is a board to fit across a bath and hold tea lights, a mug or a wineglass
Hopefully the recipient will never know the problems but delivery will be a little later than expected as I'll have to bake it on a radiator for a good few days to get it good and dry before a final waxing.
