Sapele windows, best oil for exterior and interior

Postby Fisher0906 » 04 Apr 2018, 11:37

Morning :D

I have 12 brand new untreated hardwood sapele double glazed windows arriving next week, I want to protect them as much as possible with as little maintenance as possible (they are for a treehouse, so even the ground floor windows will be about 4m in the air).

I was thinking osmo UV stable oil but they say not suitable for horizontal surfaces, which windows and doors clearly do, with cills etc.

Any recommendations at all?

I use Sikkens Cetol HLS on my external woodwork. But I think Sikkens have now changed the names??
It lasts about 4yrs on the south side before it needs another coat but after 25yrs plus it needs taking back to bare wood. The north side seems to last forever.

If you don’t want much maintenance don’t use oil.

I agree with Rod re Sikkens just don’t go for their water based stuff

So you say dont use oil, but as oil soaks in to the wood, rather than forming a crust over it, i thought this was good news.

I assumed the issue with varnishes and paints is that they sit on top of the wood and eventually peel/crack

Does the silkins recommended above come in clear? i dont want to tint the wood.

The stuff I used is coloured - I went for teak

I had a quick look at Sikkens web page and they have all sorts of new products, some are clear I think.
They are supposed to penetrate into the wood.

You may be interested to see the test I set up between Osmo UV Oil and Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus which I set up in 2012. Seems pretty conclusive.

I've also set up a test between Sikkens and Sadolin but it's too soon to draw any conclusions yet.

I’ve used Sikkens on my house for over 25yrs. On softwood frames and doors.
On the south facing side I generally touched it up every four years - wash, light sand, treat any bare patches with the base coat then a complete covering with the top paint.
It’s now reached the stage where it needs burning/scraping off to bare wood and a fresh start made or (as I’m under pressure)to replace with maintenance free aluminium or PVC.

Thank you for your advice, it seems Sillkins is the best, however, even the light oak stain is way to dark and rather orange, I really dont want to change the colour of the sapele, and would much rather a clear solution, any options?

A google search suggests that sikkens do clear finishes.

A clear finish that provides both damp and UV protection is the Holy Grail, and the manufacturer that invents it will clean up. It's a bit like trying to find sunglasses that protect your eyes without having tinted lenses. In practice, any finish that provides lasting UV protection needs a pigment of some sort. I have found that the pale oak base coat and pale oak Filter 7 Plus topcoat gives good protection whilst remaining impressively translucent. The current test comparing Pale Oak and (darker) Walnut Sikkens finishes will be interesting to see whether the darker finish outlasts the paler one. In the meantime, I have finished a Sapele Letter Box in Pale Oak Sikkens Filter 7, and it hasn't darked the wood too much and seems to be bearing up well in a sunny position.
