Morning All

I'm looking for a recommendation for a finish to put on Birch Ply laser engraved coaster mats, I'm thinking it's going to have to be heat and liquid resistant any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Steve

If you want something bombproof, then a 2 part finish such as epoxy is your best bet. Rustins Plastic Coating maybe. Most people see these as too plasticky for most circumstances on real wood, but for ply coasters they might just be ideal.

I use Treatex hard wax oil

1 thinned coat & then 2 unthinned coats, it was first recommended to me by Mark Raby who knew a thing or two about finishing & I’ve been very happy with it.
You can get sample bottles so cheap to test out & they do it in different sheens

Chestnuts Melamine finish is supposed to be quite durable although I’ve yet to try it myself.

“When you’re looking for a hard-wearing, heat and water resistant, quick drying gloss lacquer you need look no further than Melamine Lacquer”

I used this stuff on an oak table back in 1994.

heat and water resistant. I would use it again.

Do you do the laser engraving yourself Steve? I would love to see the results.

Thanks for the replies both, I've used Chestnut melamine lacquer before but didn't realise it was heat resistant.

Yes Andy I do the engraving on a K40 laser I bought last year, it is a bit limiting because the max workpiece size is A4 but hopefully I'll upgrade in the future.
Not sure if you do instagram but if you do there's some things on my instagram account, although no coasters as that's a new project idea

Cheers Steve
