Priority needs

Postby RogerS » 28 Sep 2016, 21:32

We had a power cut this morning. After it had been off for a few minutes, I called the excellent Western Power emergency line and progressed through the automated response mechanism. Happened to be the first and so the workflow took me down a different route...

The automated response system told me that because there was someone with priority needs registered at our address that they would be despatching an engineer as a priority and that if I wanted to speak to someone to stay on the line.

'Hang on a minute', I thought, 'There's no-one here with special or priority needs and I don't want to draw off resources from someone else who might need them more than me;.

So I stayed on the line and spoke to a very nice lady who asked me all the usual stuff about resetting breakers etc etc. I asked her about the priority need thing.

'That's because we have registered to this address that someone lives there who is over 60', she said.

:o

That's it. I'm officially decrepit. Over the hill. Zimmer frame, where are you.

Here, chez nous, our combined ages admittedly make three figures, and more than a gross, and, well, come to think about it, the noise of knees, hips and shoulders between us could actually deafen a road drill!!

And I started paying NI in 1965!!!

So, I'll take priority needs!

Morning Roger

That's because we have registered to this address that someone lives there who is over 60', she said.

How do they know that? I don't recall telling my supplier my DOB.

Cheers

Hi Dave

I wondered that as well. Perhaps their information goes back to sources out there in a time when we weren't so concerned about identity theft. Mind you, even if they had my internet birthday (thinks...maybe I did give them that a while back, after all, so that would explain things) it still puts me over the age threshold.

Cheers

Roger

... and the phone calls offering to fix your microsoft windows. I just tell them I've got all the double glazing I need. Or sometimes I thanks them for the call and that I'll just turn on my PC, then just walk away and see how long they hang on. Record so far is 11 mins.

After digging this soak away yesterday morning through some very tough clay I'm definitely feeling older than my years this morning, even last nights Harvest Pale muscle relaxant isn't helping

Doug have you thought about getting one of these:-
Image

I has quoted over €100 for a days hire of a mechanical one so bought this for less than €20. Took about 20 mins to bore a hole 80cm deep. A lot easier that using a spade.

Image

I am also on clay and only had to stop twice to dislodge stones with a long handled weeding fork.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Have you done a soakage test - pour a bucket of water down it to see if it disappears.
If it doesn't you have created a storage tank and not a soakaway.

Didn't need to do a soakage test Rod, after a dry night this morning I found this

Oh dear, no soakaway then.
One of my soakaways which used to take my double garage rainwater no longer works ( I'm on rock chalk) so it just runs onto the garden now.
Similarly the run off from my shed just flows onto the garden too.
Doesn't seem to cause any problems.

Problem is Rod the soak away is to take the rainwater from the drive which is quite steep, there's not other option as the bungalow is on quite a slope with the main sewer being at the back of the property.
This photo gives an idea of the slope I concreted a section of path next to the drive yesterday

Image

Ironically the bungalow is near the top of the hill so I wasn't expecting the hole to fill with water, I'm wondering if the water is the result of a water main leak as a few local properties have had trouble with their mains & this property is on the lower side of the street.
I'll know more Monday as I intend to opener the hole up a little more so I can go deeper & see if I can get through the clay, it was a tad tight in there Andy with me & the auger ;)
