Weedkiller, concentrated

Postby Andyp » 12 Oct 2016, 11:01

I've just been to the 3 local DIY sheds around here looking for Roundup. All I can find is ready mix, ready to spray, 5 litres, good for about 800m2.
The bottle I have just finished (after about 6 years) was 1 litre of concentrate good for 4000m2.

Having looking online it is possible to get the concentrate of the shelf in the UK but apparently not here.

Something else to add to the Xmas list.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

This comes about because the EU wanted to ban Glyphosate, then changed their minds. Bless'em.

I recently found 5L of concentrated glyphosate for about 35€ at Gamme Vert, dont know if the group is just local to us, but you might find one. My previous can of exactly the same brand lasted 15yrs and for much of that I was still living at Forge du Gravier with 30 acres to maintain.
Cheers !

If you're passing Tiverton on your xmas shopping travels, I have 2 x 250 ml bottles of glysophate, (same as roundup), left from my land clearance.

Thanks David, Gamme Vert do come this far North but hardly local. Will have to wait until I am passing. It is still available on line but horrendous postage and is listed on the roundup-jardin.com website but their list of sellers is not accurate!
I wonder why the big chains have stop selling it. Oh wait a minute that is obvious the ready to spray stuff is nearly the same price as a the same quantity of concentrate.

Never buy any gardening chemicals already made up. The shelflife is not that great. Prices are rising though even of the concentrated stuff. You have reminded me to ask our farm manager what he uses as he recently sprayed the footpath through a crop field and the results were remarkably quick. Whatever it is we should be able to get some - one of the advantages of having Farmhouse in our house name

I bought some of the professional concentrated type last year - pretty sure it was from Amazon.

Thanks Roger, I'd will ask the farmer who owns the field next door, from whom we bought the house.

If not I will get 5l of the stuff from here

I think that, according to HG, it's not very effective at this time of year.

I'd recommend Clinic Ace https://www.amazon.co.uk/CLINIC-STRONG- ... clinic+ace

I've been using this this season to try & contain the mares tail at the allotment, Roundup just doesn't touch it, had pretty good results so far.

yes I know Roger, I only just got the lawn sorted and have been faffing about for a few weeks and let the driveway slip. It will probably have to wait until the spring now.

I wonder what else it has Doug as it seems to have the same level of glyphosphate ie 480g/l as Roundup.

I mix in some ammonium sulphamate* (NOT Sulphate) in with my generic glyphosate
About 1/2 teaspoonful per litre of diluted mix.
This seems to make it more effective on ivy and brambles

Bob

* This has been withdrawn from sale as a weedkiller ( AKA rootout) but can be purchased as a compost accelerator typically from ebay. Vendors conveniently still include weedkilling instructions

The problem with mares tail is that it's waxy, most weed killers just slide off having little or no effect. I have seen some that recommend bruising the weeds before spraying them, I would guess the stuff Doug has used has something to act on the wax to get the killing stuff into the weed.

On really tough stuff like brambles etc, I don a pair of yellow Marigolds and use SBK neat, straight out the bottle and paint it on with a small paintbrush. Seems to work - Rob

anything work for ground clearance ?

i.e. .. not applied to foliage .. but watered into the soil

again for doing a drive ..
some Russian vine has set in on "our" side after a neighbour planed some !
(he shouldn't have planted it there anyway !)

that stuff just takes over !!!

Depends if you want to replant the area. Glyphosate is ideal if you do as it is does not affect the soil only the leaves it lands on.

In which case, salt. Or go to Turkey and bring some back from there as eBay are advertising it from there.

Roger, why you not told me that before.

I always thought sodium chloride (what I put on my chips) and sodium chlorate (now banned weedkiller) were not interchangeable. (OK I wont bung the later on my chips).

I have just done the drive with all the salt I had in the house (about 3/4 of a cup), a litre of clear vinegar and 3 litres of warm water. I will report back.

I've still got about 2.5l of Sodium Chlorate left. It's not as potent as the old granulated stuff but pretty lethal.

I shall have to hoard it!

I'm kidding if anyone needs any and it's OK to post then let me know.
