Garden rake ferrule - Sorted

Postby Andyp » 02 Nov 2016, 17:53

Have you ever seen a garden rake ferrule similar to the on seen here. But with a bolt on the end for fixing to the rake head?

Image

Or any other method for fixing a new handle to a flat rake head like above with a hole in it.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Which would mean screwing into the end grain of the handle which I do not think would last very long

I wondered quite what the problem was as it looks like there is a hole in the side already and not one up the end.

Oh dear, Sorry, I am not explaining myself very well am I?

Here is the aforementioned rake head.

I do not have a ferrule of any sort, only a suitable handle. Even if I had a ferrule how would I attached it to the rake? Clearly if I screw through the exiting hole into the end of the handle it won't last 5 mins.

ahh .. Icy , said the blind man !

could you make something up from some elec conduit and cap ? or copper pipe and cap ?

bolt through the cap to the rake head, and screw through the ferrule ?

Must be designed to fit a specific handle?
Drill the end of a pole to take a threaded rod and epoxy in.
Then reinforce the end of handle with a suitable ferrule or band clamp.
Secure rake head with nut and washer.

Hmm! I'm sure I read somewhere the other day that you would not have any use for a metalwork lathe?.

You need something bodged into a ferrule as Tusses suggests. Then I would fit a metal cross dowel into the handle within the length of the ferrule to avoid weakening the end of the handle. Pass a bolt through the tines, through the ferrule and into the metal dowel and tighten up the lot. A few tack welds between ferrule and the tines would make a cracking job.

Now that is an idea. A 22mm brass stop end compression fitting on s short piece of pipe. Make a hole in the stop end and then bolt through rake head. Screw or two through the pipe into the handle. Sounds good, shame I don't have any 22mm pipe. I'll be on the scrounge.

do you have hardware stores anywhere near ? use an adapter piece ,90 bend etc .. and cut of what you need rather than buy a length ..

but anything should be easy to find lying around ! .. oh .. or is that just me !

This is how I sorted it.

The threaded tube and the brass end cap bought from a local shed less than a fiver.

I did not have a lock nut of the right size so used two nuts instead. Shame it went a bit off centre. That tube was hammered on so tight I have not seen the need for further security. I can always had a screw or two later.

The idea was Tusses I can only take credit for the execution. :D

I might have to undo it though as there is no reason why the brass end cap should not be central on the rake head.

Thanks Roger although my rake is hardly an heirloom like your fork. In fact it must have been less than 9 years old when the alloy handle parted company with the head.

Glad I gave some inspiration :-)

Obviously it has no effect on function, but if you want it in the middle, maybe loosen it, add some epoxy ? shakeproof washers ?, and tighten up with it looking absolutely, undoubtedly central :-)
