So you think you would like a Smart Meter?

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

So you think you would like a Smart Meter?

Maybe have a read of this first...

To say nothing of the possible thin ends of wedges that they might permit.

Not at all sure if they are being forced upon us here. Not heard anything yet from EDF.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

It is not compulsory here but there is a significant advertising campaign to extol the virtues of smart metering to try and soften up the populace to accept the things. The main claim being to "keep Gas and Leccy (two animated mischievous characters) under control"
You have to dig into the smaller print to get to the bit where householder has the right to decline the offer of a smart meter.

I did notice "Hive" was being advertised separately from BG for ages .. but you could see BG in the small print .. now the BG ad's are selling Hive for about a tenner a month ! I'm pretty sure there are other web based / text based options that would be more comprehensive and cheaper !

Thanks for the head up Bob. I'll have to read more. Can't see us having a choice to install one or not as the meter is not in the house and probably not even on the property. As you know they tend be set in the fence/wall/boundary.

There is a bit more info here https://www.french-property.com/news/mo ... ers_linky/

The situation is a bit more straightforward with the electricity supply monopoly in France but there could be still be security problems with the data links.

If the meters are like the UK ones they will have a remote controlled cut off switch and the security of the data link is not that difficult to intercept if you know how. There is a possible criminal threat that the baddies could cut off supplies either to individual consumers or all those in an area.

Once the electricity suppliers can read meters whenever they wish this opens the door for time varying tariffs.
Not just off peak cheap leccy at night as we are used to but high charges a peak times say 17:00 to 19:00.
One they can control on/off it provides a mechanism for load shedding.
This is highly desirable from the supply side when like now both the UK and French grid are close to breaking point.
I believe that in France there are already tariffs where on certain days there is a high probability of being cut off and this may be being done via the KVA limiting switches but In UK we don't have this and we don't really want it either.

Thanks Bob, I found that site while looking around earlier. I had never heard of Enedis before I thought it was either EDF for supply or ERDF for distribution. Since 2007 it has been possible to to switch suppliers but in reality very few people do.

We are on a KVA limit here, our standing charge is based on the assumed KVA. I forgot what but I do know if I switch on all the electric rads and the oven, kettle etc it will trip. Only happened once or twice when returning from winter holidays. I now have better thermostatic controls and timers so we never have to come back to a cold house.

As it happens I (applied) switched again yesterday.
The suppliers here make no effort to retain customers. I'm within a few weeks of the end of my current Gas and Leccy deal.
When I enquired about a new 12 month deal from my current supplier, my payments would go from £62 to £83.50 per month. They might just as well print two fingers on the bottom of the bill.

This is the result of "find our best deal" button on the website :-

Changing supplier, the increase is +£12 per month to £74 and £30 cash back after 3 months equivalent to £71.50 or £858 per annum.

It is a bit like car insurance, there is rarely any concept of loyalty and you need to change company most years to avoid getting screwed.
