Computer poll

Postby RogerS » 24 Dec 2016, 11:13

Curious to know what the computer demographics are among forum members.

Not sure whether I should have added options for tablets or Chromebooks

PC running Win10 (at SWIMBO's insistence) and a MacBook Pro.

Rod, I've edited the poll and so you can enter in both options - PC and Mac - if you like.

I've used an I-Pad for the last 3 years, I do all my business bookwork on it, quotes, invoices & accounts

Only once in those 3 years could I have done with a computer & that was only because the IKEA kitchen planning software isn't compatible with an I-Pad.

I could do with a bigger screen though but that's mainly my eyes deteriorating as I get older & I could always get an I-Pad pro :eusa-think:

I had a little grumble when I ticked PC too, as I still have an XP dual boot set up to drive the laser cutter

But Linux for me by choice

Ah yes....the iPad Pro. Now that IS a tablet ! I've played around with various tablets from time to time. A crappy under-powered poor-resolution Android which was bought on eBay and promptly sold as it was so bad. I did have an iPad for a while when we went to Japan and the interesting thing was that having bought and tested it in the January, come our trip in May I couldn't find it! Buried under paper for all those months. So I sold it.

Now with the impending move and the likelihood of being out and about a lot looking at stuff or on the estate (there's posh ;) ) thought a tablet might be useful with a 3G or 4G dongle. So I tried a Huawei 7" from Three and it's pretty spritely. The only problem is the display. It's sort of OK-ish resolution wise but some websites, the letters seem to render strangely depending on where you have scrolled to. They sort of go in and out of sharpness as the edges of the font coincide/don't coincide with the screen resolution.

And then....

And then I popped into John Lewis and looked at an iPad Pro. Oh me...oh my...I want one.

Iphone 5 and SWMBO galaxy something combo tablet and phone.
3 Arduino Uno R3s. 1 runs the Solar PV excess energy dump, 1 runs the thermal store calorimeter and the third one is work in progress as I write, will optimise the boiler operating conditions.

Mac Mini for me and MacBook Air for Mission control. iPhone 5S for me and MC has been given a used iPhone 6 from Santa. The old Vista laptop may be emptied, cleaned and converted to Linux for use in the 'shop when I've finished building it.

High power desktop PC for photo editing etc running Win7
Regular laptop PC also running Win7
Isabelle's laptop PC running Win7
Photo club's high power laptop PC (lives here between meetings) running Win7

Somewhere in the attic is a Dell laptop PC from 1999 running Win98, still works perfectly after many years of abuse including crossing the atlantic at least a dozen times. Not not sure what to do with it but cant bear to chuck it !

Also in the attic a desktop PC dating from around 2002 running XP - also in perfect working order.
Cheers !
