Top tip

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

You know those rectangular cans with the metal handle that encourages you to tip them in a certain direction ?

You must also know then that usually, and especially when full, that results in splashes all over the place.

But if you tip it in a different direction then, voila my dear Hastings, never the splash.

I thought everybody knew that. :D I have been doing it for years. Also works for some large cartons of orange juice where the pouring spout is similarly placed to one side.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

And when engine oil used to come in them and you were changing yours, the lid/pourer was offset, so if you had that on the top while you poured as well as holding the can's flat side, it didn't glug all over the place!

I've known this for about 10 years, but for purposes of full exclosure, only because I saw a guy on Dragon's Den who came up with a great device to stop this happening.

They let him go through the pitch without a word then Peter Davis stood up, took the oil can, turned it on it's side and did exactly what you said.

He left the Den quite promptly after that!

Like others, I thought that everyone knew that. I first learned the trick 50 plus years ago when refuelling armoured cars from jerrycans. We used to have to put in some 20 or 30 gallons of petrol using the 20 litre/4.5 gallon jerrycans and you didn't want the fuel splashing all over the place.

The same technique applied when topping up oil levels on the vehicles or even one's own car (in the days when you might have to top them up every week).
