How not to reach for an umbrella or how to break a rib

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

How not to reach for an umbrella or how to break a rib

Postby Andyp » 16 Jan 2017, 19:48

Being As Roger asked and not wishing to throw Rob's thread further off topic...

Pi$$ing down with rain and wanted the umbrella, which was in the boot* of the car, to walk to bus stop to meet daughter. Car was backed up against a wall so could not open boot.
Car has 3 rows of seats. So get in the middle row and kneal on the seat and reach back to the 3rd to fold the seat fowards so I can gain entry to the boot. Umbrella just out of reach so lurched myself forward attempting a superman type position balancing on the top of the seat backs as my torso came down I heard and felt the rib go. 2nd one up from the bottom. I cant guarantee that it is broken, certainly cracked.

Dont make me laugh, cough, sneeze or induce hiccoughs. I can drive the car but looking over left shoulder is not on.

Boot = trunk in some languages :D
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Ouch!

It isn't the break that hurts particularly. It is the torn intercostal muscles which go with it. They take a little while to clear up, because every time you cough or sneeze or turn over in bed, you tear them again a little. Best of luck getting up tomorrow morning!!!

This happened last thursday Mike. This morning I tried to do a bit of gardening and it hurts more now than the last 2 days. Must be more patient.

Unlucky Andy.

Don't want to get you down but in my experience you are looking at minimum 2 months and up to 5 until it feels right again depending how badly you've torn the muscles as Mike mentions.

I'd have driven the car forward a bit and opened the boot. :eusa-whistle:

Seriously, hope you get better soon.

That's bad luck Andy - I've done it the past sitting in a metal garden chair and leaning over sideways over the chair arm to pick something up from the floor.
Nothing you can really do except be patient.

Definitely did too much yesterday. Worst night since it happened and this morning even deep breathing is hard work.
May have to go to see doctor tomorrow.

Really not a lot of point mate, all they can do is give you pain relief, they don't even bother strapping them up nowadays.

Mate of mine cracked 2/3 ribs in a football match at the start of the season and it was a month of no sleep, lot of pain when lying down and even breathing. Eased off a bit after a month but was another 2 months before they were healed and 5 months before he was pain free.

You just need to take it as easy as possible for the next 2-3 weeks to let the muscles start to heal then you can up the pace. Ice the area as often as possible too.

Very true, although in car-crash type injuries, broken ribs can be forced through the lungs, in which case doctors are very much who you want to be seeing. Andy won't have done that, though.

Oh yes totally agree Mike. He would know about it if he'd punctured a lung too though.

I've done both sides, right side coming of my motor bike,
left side taking my black belt exam ! lol

one thing I found helps, is breathing.
Take a deep chest breath to expand your rib cage as much as poss
Hold it as long as you can, and let it out slowly.
Do it a couple of times, every time it starts to "seize up".
It hurts a bit when you do it, but I found it was better afterwards.

Obviously if it hurts too much , don't do it ! I'm not a Doc ! .. it just helped me :)

After reading all that I'm bloody glad I don't own an umbrella

Hope the pain subsides quickly Andy :eusa-pray:

On the bright side if you're confined to barracks for the next few months the weather will have picked up by then & you won't need to reach for that umbrella for quite a while ;)

Take it easy Andy. This reminds me of when I was an apprentice, one of the others was rushed off to have his appendix removed, we had a whip round and bought the best joke book we could find for him.
Regards,
Dave
My tool kit is almost complete, only a few more to get.

Thanks Doug. Dont forget that I am an Englishman abroad, there are certain expectations that I need to fulfill. Carrying an umbrella at all times is one of those. :D
