Getting water into the greenhouse

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

Getting water into the greenhouse

Postby Andyp » 26 Feb 2017, 12:39

This may seem obvious to some but it has taken me a few months to work out how to get water from the butt back into the greenhouse. In the old polytunnel I ran a hose and just hung the end up above the water level of the butt to stop it flowing.
Our new greenhouse deserved something a bit more refined.

Hose from the water but in a conduit and under the path.

Ran the hose around the inside of the GH

And attach to a suitable tap

Tiles are there until I find some paving slabs.

Lettuces bought as plugs under 5l water bottles with the bottoms cut off at a cost €0.85 each (the bottles not the plugs ;) )

Parsley and coriander growing nicely as well.

Cut our first daffodils yesterday. Spring has sprung.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Andy,
Do you find all sorts of "life" forming in the translucent water butt?

I have a blue barrel doing a similar job and the tap gets blocked now and then and a surprising amount of stuff has to be extracted.

Bob, I've had that "white" 1000l butt for 5 or 6 years and have had no detritus blocking the tap but this is the first year I have been able to collect rain water. Previously I filled it up from the tap. When it gets empty I must replace the horrid plastic tap with a brass one.

I have also had two blue 200l barrels for about the same time which have been collecting rain water from the roof of the wood store which is corrugated bitumen. There is plenty of muck in the bottom of those but so far no blockages.

Are your taps a bit too close to the bottom of the barrel?

Thanks Roger, even if I had thrown the contents away at €0.85ea they were are bargain. I am buying one a week at the moment until I have enough.
I find they serve a dual purpose. Keeping the slugs at bay until they are strong enough to withstand the odd nibble and offering a bit of extra warmth.
