Logging burn-cycle durations

Postby RogerS » 20 Aug 2017, 09:55

Wondered if anyone knew of a gizmo that I could attach to the new oil CH boiler when it's installed to log the duration of each (long) burn cycle? I can measure the total number of burn hours with a simple hour meter but I'd really like to know the duration of each burn cycle.

I know I could do it with an Arduino and much as I'd like to get to grips with it I don't have the time.

How about a logging multimeter. Once you have one you will find lots of uses for it.

Thanks for the tip, Bob. Never heard of one of those. First pass on eBay shows them to be a bit pricey...but perhaps I'm over-speccing !!

I think i paid about £35 for mine and a bit more for an RS232 to usb adaptor as fewer and fewer computers have a real serial port.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Multimeter-DM ... xy7nNTRS9G

I also have a lascar logger that I use on the thermal store. you can set the reading interval. 2minutes give about 6 weeks of readings and i unplug it once a month to graph the performance. Beautiful device and good software.

That's reassuring to know, thanks, Bob. I'd clocked that one on eBay and did wonder about it.

Think you have duplicated the links :eusa-shhh:

oops link fixed now

Normally sell for twice this particular price so grab it if you want it.
Its DC voltage only up to 30v IIRC

Unfortunately the Lascar has to go back as the software doesn't support XP.

Need to check if the multimeter works with the Mac.

I feel an Arduino-moment coming on.

Ah well...one hour on and that little exercise entered the 'life is too short' category.

Found my old XP laptop and after I found out how to turn it on, fired it up and connected the logging multimeter you linked to above. Found New Hardware...oh great...USB2.0-Ser!....CPU 100% for ever...task manager eventually agreed to kick in so I could kill the fruitless exercise while it tried to find something to drive this interface.

Googled a bit. Found a link to a ZIP file. Then found my WinZip trial had expired. Downloaded WinZip again. To be told (after I'd wasted the time downloading it) that it wasn't compatible with XP. Found another ZIP type program....I can see DLL's...no idea what to do with them.

I'd ask lascar. All my lascar kit works with XP as I have nothing else.

They are a very helpful lot.

First rule of XP USB is the drivers must be installed first and then the hardware introduced.

Will do. Does the Lascar s/w let you set up the sampling rate ?

I have given up trying to get the DMM software running using the multimeter.

Possibly the same issue. Install the drivers for the meter interface before plugging it into the usb port

Yes you have control of the sampling rate with lascar software

I have EasyLog USB version 7.2.0.0 which runs perfectly with XP

I'm struggling to find something called USB API which Windows XP tells me I need to use the Lascar. Just spent several hours fruitlessly downloading stuff...things like DriverAssist which then tells me I need to buy it after taking an age to download and install..(my laptop is very geriatric)..which is IMO sharp practice.

Then when I go to follow the link to see how much it would cost getting a 'site not found error'...time after time. It's been such a long time since I fired up the laptop...5 years +...I really have no idea what's out there and what to avoid. Used to be on top of all this PC malarkey.

So I'll give them a call next week but I have the strong feeling that I won't be going down this route as much much too time consuming.

Here is a source for easylog7.2
http://downloads.informer.com/easylog-usb/7.2/
ONLY use the pale green link to avoid junk and don't accept offers to download anythig else - basic surfing common sense!.

Once your lappy has seen a usb device and yet failed to run it for lack of a driver, then you need to remove any reference to it in device manager

Control panel/system/hardware tab/device manager

look for yellow ? under usb relating to unknown hardware and delete it.

Run the lascar software and let it install drivers and only then plug in the hardware.

Bad news - good news routine

Bad news is that link gets modified and downloads version 7.5 not 7.2

Good news is that I have installed 7.5 on a spare xp laptop and not only does it run fine it also installs the drivers needed for the lascar devices.

So no problems that I can see.

Which DVM did you get and did it come with a USB interface or an adaptor? If the latter, did that come with any software? Quite often the Chinese usb interfaces use a different chip a CH340 or CH341. The drivers for these are not included in Windaz and so you need to either install them from software provided or google for the drivers and install them. An installer is normally bundled with the zipped driver download.

I got the one that you linked to. No RS232-USB adapter. A small DVD with s/w on it. No driver as far as I an see.

But the Lascar will do all that I need. Nice DVM though..if I'd not bought one recently I'd keep it for the extra goodies such as temperature and frequency.

OT:

can I just but in for a sec .. not worth starting a new thread for .. but xp related..

Does anyone know of a safe download for sp3 for XP ?
I'm using my daughters old pc for the laser and it's running sp2
and I do connect to the interweb.

I've seen it everywhere for download .. but I know the windows xp install disk on ebay etc. has a few bits and bobs on it that my virus / malware scanners pick up. So I've gone without sp3 for now

Yes, I do.
I thought that would have been evident form the email I sent you yesterday with all the drivers you will need.
let me know if you did not get it?

yep .. that's where I'm at.
Can't think I ever had an OEM disk with it on either, used to just install XP .. log on , and update.
I tried wayback machine on microsoft , that didn't work.
