Re: Flicker Free Flourescent Tube replacment. HELP with Wiri

I knew this would not be a walk in the park.

Wiring the new HF Ballast should be a breeze however the starters, which are not needed for the HF ballast, are hard wired to the light socket.

I cannot see how I can prise open the light socket without breaking it so can I just leave the started in place or will it adversely affect the HF ballast?

Also what is the little black box attached to the connector strip? This is where the L and N comes in and gets split to the two existing ballasts. Am I right in assuming that as the new ballast is is for twin lights that this little black box is not required?

Take the starter out and break it open carefully. short the connections together inside so the wires to the glass bulb are connected. You may be able to just twist the capsule to short it out. Then glue the cover back on and re fit the starter. It is now just a straight connection to the lampholder. In the unlikely event it is an electronic starter instead of a glow switch just connect the pins together somehow.

The black thing is a RF suppressor. There will probably be a another RF capacitor inside the starter, neither are required now.

to this

And all wired up

I had to move one of the ceiling fixings and now it works. No buzz, no flicker.

Thanks to all who contributed.

edit: BTW this is the cable I got hold off

Dunno. Although she has light sensitive epilepsy it is not the only cause but once the physicians tell you that her exposure to florescent tubes should be kept to a minimum than you have no choice but to do something.
She spends many hours under florescent lights at school but as never had a seizure there.

I noticed last night and again just now that when the lights are switched on there is a pulsing of grey rings along the tubes for the first minute or two while they warm up. Definitely not a flicker though. I am also experimenting with different colour tubes. At the moment we have one warm white (which I do not like) and one cool daylight. Looks a little odd at the moment.
