Sorry I meant I thought it was hidden but there is actually a key for it on UK keyboards.

ON a UK PC keyboard (which I presume is the same as a UK mac keyboard), the tilde is in a different vertical position when used as an accent compared to its use on its own in mathematics for example

On a Mac keyboard, which is different to a PC, it’s on the lower left next to the shift key. It’s above the space bar on the left on an iPad.

Hi Andy follow the below:-

Safe boot hold down shift key on start, go into disk utils in applications, repair permissions, this may take a long time, make a new admin user with full permission.

Best of luck ,if this doesn't work goggle imac on a smart phone. for a alternative.

All sorted now Richard, thanks.

Deleting the users key chain folders and re-entering passwords solved the problem.
I do not think therefore I do not am.
