Help. Just buggered iMac login

Postby Andyp » 07 Nov 2017, 10:35

I have just done a software up on by FILs iMac. I am the admin user on it and he is a standard user.
Now he cannot login from start up. If I am logged in and we switch users the password works fine. If I switch off and he tries to login the password is not known. I have tried resetting the password but problem persists.

What on earth have I done?
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Not sure what’s happened there but try changing him to admin and log in. Shut down the machine then change him back to user and see what happens?

Thanks. Tried that. No joy. Set hem up as admin. I can switch users and he can log in but if he tries to change his passowrd it does not accept the passowrd he used to log in. As he is now admin as well I cannot change password. And he still cannot log in from start up.

Lots of hits on Google in response to "password not working imac"
Just a thought when you get it sorted out, do you really need to set any passwords.
I don't use em on my computers.
Good luck

Good point Bob.
password for him is not necessary. Not sure if it is an option on the Mac not to have one for standard user. I will have to investigate. I am back home now and just running some tests on my Mac and it looks like once a password has been created you can no longer not have one at all.

Am searching apple forums and google for solutions.

Think I've sussed it. Appears to be a key chain issue. I've recreated the problem on my Mac and it can be sorted by manually resetting the key chain password. Will try on my FIL's mac when I go back later.

One of the frustrations of sorting out issues on his Mac by the way is the fact I have to work in French on his user and use a French keyboard. This can be changed of course but it does add to the hassles.

Phone the Apple help desk; they will even sort out older machines now. I do it all the time when I have an issue with my iMac and they now do a screen share so they can see what's going happening on your screen. Brilliant service - Rob

I wonder if formatting the HD and restoring from a backup (assuming you have one) will sort it? In any case I’d be interested in the final solution. ;)

OK I am ashamed to say I had to resort to contacting the help desk - thanks Rob as you say, prepared to help out even out of warranty and with no apple care - amazing, and preprared to speak in english too.

As suspected the keychain had got itself into a muddle. By deleting the whole keychain folder in the library and re-entering passwords we solved the problem.

Why?...it's what they do. Saves an awful lot of aggro in the long run and the Apple guys will sort out any problem. It's a no brainer - Rob

'cos phoning the help desk is one step down from reading the manual :) In over 10 years of Mac ownership this is the first time I have had a problem I could not self diagnose and sort out with a little googling.

If anyone cares or is interested further test and evaluation has thrown up an issue with using two languages on one keyboard. Sys admin in English, User in French with French keyboard.
If User cannot change his password ( requested by him so he did not forget ) then make sure passwords do not use characters that are in different places on the English and French keyboards.

Oh and if anyone can tell be where the squiggle ~ character is on a French iMac keyboard I would be grateful.

Looks like tilda (squiggle to you!) is under the £ just left of return.

I was not sure and the google images were not that clear.
In that case I assume there is no tilda on a French Mckeyboard.
I also could not see square brackets or curly brackets.
God knows how French mathematicians manage.

Have you really got a French keyboard Mark?

Anyway don't worry I think I have found where it should be, alt + N. Works on my English keyboard even though there is a dedicated ~ key.

I wondered as well, I used to use Tilde quite a bit in DTP work years ago.

No I don't, but I thought (incorrectly) that tilde was a hidden character even on UK kids but it isn't. Hashtag is which con fuddled me,

Glad you've sorted anyway.

Mac problems must be catching - just switched my Macbook on after a lapse of a few weeks to find a message “No Wi-fi hardware installed”.
Will have to sort this out later as I have the grass to cut.

I am sure you will find the tilde with an alt+N. The reason it is there is for the Spanish language as in españa.
