How to fit a waste outlet

Postby RogerS » 01 Jan 2018, 13:06

Got this waste outlet. I am assuming that the washbasin is sandwiched between the two conical washers (orange arrow).

But what stops the water running down the thread and past the nut?

'cos it does.

Throw both of those conical washers away, buy some plumbers mait, roll a sausage of PM, put it on the underside of the flared lip of the waste, push the waste into the basin, run another sausage of PM around the waste where it exits the basin, putthe flat plastic washer over the thread & then tighten the whole thing up with the plastic nut.

Doug

Do you reckon one can use Plumbers Mait to seal a bath waste (when you cannot use the black rubber washer that normally goes between nut and bath because the waste trap thread length is not long enough. Bloody designer bath...say no more.)

In other words, there is just the nut and PM underneath the bath.

You're not going to get enough pull between the bit above the bath and the bit below I wouldn't have though. Sounds like a recipe for a leak to me. I would be trying to get hold of a few more washers to pack it out...

I don't follow you. It's effectively a double-skin at the bottom of the bath.

That bottle trap only just tightens up enough but to do that I've had to remove the black rubber washer that should go between nut and bath.

Ah okay, my misunderstanding, I thought the thread didn't run high enough up to the bottom of the bath for the nut to tighten against!

In your case then yes I would thing PM would be fine there, it's just a putty doing the same job as the washer. Only thing to be wary of is whether PM degrades/dries out over time as it might need a renewal every now and then.

Yep, I make most wastes in with plumbers mait, you could do with a plastic washer between the bath & the lock nut like you did on the basin. If you’ve not got one that size you could cut one from a plastic lid.

I'd love to put in a plastic washer but there simply is no spare thread left.

What about making one out of the side of a plastic 4 pint milk carton? That’s only about half a mil thick and would give you the washer you need without losing thread.

You can cut a little off the nut on the trap which will ease things just cut it as square as possible

Sand it off, that will keep it flat.

Can I get away with not putting in a thin washer ? Just using PM ?

I'm struggling to understand how anyone can claim to fit one of these CoS's.

"Any P trap ..McAlpine etc..should be OK" said the support person at Clearwater Baths

So I got one. Same problem.

Not only that I noticed that the slot in their waste doesn't even coincide with the integral bath overflow.

Well, it's in but without any Plumbers Mait. PM was too thick to compress enough so I used Plumbers Gold. I'll let it dry overnight and then see what's what tomorrow.

I don't have a spanner large enough for that nut. Managed to tighten it up enough with two hands but if it needs to come out again, no idea what to do. :(

I hate messing about with bathroom and kitchen waste pipes.

Interestingly I drew a blank trying to find a bath waste - slotted - but without any tubes to an overflow (if you get my drift). This bath has the overflow integral to it whereas most other baths have a separate hole up the side and a tube in the waste outlet that connects back down to the waste.
