I have a chrome finisher but need the mild steel fabrication as per the attached drawing.

Am open to suggestions to size changes. maybe make the tube smaller cross-sectional area ?

Would anyone like a small paid for project ?

Length of wardrobe rail from Screwfix and 2 screws with a few washers under the head that fit inside the tube. Job done.

It looks like it presses on tiles so you don't really need flange plates on the end.

Nice idea, Robert. Trouble is SWMBO wants square or rectangular to match the shower fittings. I can find stainless steel but not chrome. Must speak to the chrome finisher to see if he can chrome stainless steel.

I'd also come to almost the same conclusion, in that any plates at either end to spread the load did not actually need to be welded to the main tube. Just the small issue of me actually being able to cut the end of the tube square ! When I tried cutting the initial wall-moving attempt with the conduit I always ended up cutting at an angle. Cheap hacksaw ?

Just a thought, how about a cheap angle grinder stand........if you have a cheap angle grinder and metal cutting disc.

Sorry, I can’t get the url copied on this iPad, I’m sure ther,s a way.

Masking tape round the tube at the cut point, sheet of A4 paper wrapped round the tube will give a square straight wrap line. draw along the paper edge then you have a reliable line to cut to. Keep the cut shallow and turn the tube. square cut even with a dodgy hacksaw.

If you really want to get tube chromed yourself I have a few lengths of ERW 25mm square tube in my shed. Bit of surface rust but nothing serious. The seam could always go on top to save trying to polish it out. Available for the cost of delivery. Can't weld ends on now that I don't have a factory any more :)

Many thanks, Robert, for your kind offer but I've managed to source some locally.

Time for an update on this. I bought some steel square section off eBay and some sheet plate. Pure serendipity as a few days later my electrician popped round for a chat and a coffee and it turns out that he's a keen metalworker and got a lot of kit. So he helped me cut the tube squarely to length and then welded a couple of studs onto the two end plates to help hold them and the square section together while I fitted them after being chromed up.

I came to the conclusion that I didn't need to weld those endplates on as the welds would never be as clean and crisp.

Yesterday I collected them from the chrome guys who have done a fantastic job.

If I get time later today I'll fit it
