Bet you're chuffed, Andy. What's the going rate for concrete ?

Yep Roger it is quite satisfying especially to see the water already dripping over those foremost boards.

Dunno the price of concrete. The item on the quote includes the labour, prep, and reinforcements. I reckon it works out at about €100 per m3.

No progress yet Mark. Builders been working elsewhere for a couple of weeks. I’d rather the money in my account than theirs ;) so no hurry.
They should be here tomorrow. Steps off the terrace to be made and total rebuild of the steps up from the drive. That will be the last of the concrete. Tiles were ordered four weeks ago so should be here soon then it will time to render. Should be done by Christmas ;) ;)

Concreting finished at last.

New steps cast from drive to garden.

The top step is now above the level of the garden so I will have to do some landscaping there.

Steps between the two terraces also cast. Area to the right is for a water butt

Small foundation laid for a planter to contain a flowering climber of some sort to grow up and over the soon to be constructed arbour/windbreak. A rose is current favourite but she is bound to change her mind.

Re: Removing tiles from terrace - Tiles too shiny

Oh, dear.
After a few delays the new tiles arrived today ready for the tiler to start next week.

Problem. the missus does not like the shine on the tiles. She, and I, are concerned about the level of reflected sunlight from the tiles and the affect this may have on a daughter with light sensitive epilepsy.

Not sure if the photo helps. The tiles are not 100% all over reflecting the sun but are sufficiently shiny to cause concern.
Described as glazed porcelain frost proof tiles with a grip surface. I am not sure what if anything can be done. Will see the supplier this afternoon. Could be an expensive mistake.

Could you not sand them with a 60g to remove the glazing sheen ?

Hmmmm, glazed does suggest a reflective sheen to me...

Sanding them off might work though, you're just trying to knock mach the sheen on the glaze, which will then scuff up further with use.

Andy,

having a relative and having worked with a colleague who had tonic-clonic seizures, I've had to do research both for family and professional purposes and mostly I have found that that triggers for those with photosensitive epilepsy are usually flicker or pattern related, rather than random lighting or patterns.

https://www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/photosensitive-epilepsy/triggers

(For my last job interview I had to give a presentation on the health and road safety issues of wind turbines and the potential for their flicker to induce tonic-clonic seizures in anybody with photosensitive epilepsy)

I wont touch them until we have spoken to the suppliers later.

Malc, thanks. We have read extensively too on this subject and I cannot argue. See PM.

The missus spoke to the supplier earlier and they can’t wont take them back nor is there anything that can be done to remove the shine.
Glazed does not been gloss or shine. Glazed matt finish are available.
We will argue that we did not ask for a shiny finish, we were not told that they would be shiny and the ones were saw were not shiny. It was pi$$ing down with rain back in February when we saw the, but that aint our fault.
Our builder technically ordered the tiles and we have not yet paid that part of the bill so it is in his interest to try and sort this out. Big bank holiday weekend here so nowt will happen until next week.

Cobblers. 60g or even 100g will remove it. Do you have any spare offcuts ? While waiting for a response maybe you could have a go ? I'm hoping you've got a ROS of some description.

Yep, but that’s our last resort. I would not want to remove either the anti slip nor the sufficient glaze to compromise the finish.
I am reluctant to try anything quite yet. If the builder/tiler wants to have ago than that’s another matter. Sanding over 50m2 of tiles with a ROS will be a PITA.

Tiling Terrace - next problem, drainage mat and edge profile

PostPosted: 05 Oct 2018, 09:24
by Andyp
New tiles arrive this morning and the tiler arrived yesterday to lay the drainage mat, Schulter Dita-Drain.
Image
http://www.schluter.co.uk/ditra-drain.aspx

Never having seen this drainage mat and not knowing how it works I asked what happens at the edge where the horizontal tiles met the vertical tiles? Where does the nicely channelled water go as the matt does not go on the vertical surfaces.
Oh he says you need a special edge profile. Eh? says I and showed what the builder spec'd.
That's no good says he. That wont let the water drain away.

Image

Seems we need this. Schlüter®-BARA-RW
Image

The price ia about €40 for a 2.5m length (that's 4 x the price of the original spec.) The terrace is 10m by 5m  Plus all the the steps.

I am not a happy bunny at this point. The builder has known (or incorrectly spec'd) this since February.

Seeing the builder on Monday. I hope we can find a cheaper alternative before then.

Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative?

I must be missing something here. If you have impervious tiles on top of impervious cement and impervious grout then how does the water get in to be 'drained away' ?
