My New Work Jacket.

Postby Pinch » 11 Feb 2018, 16:37

I've been thinking about buying myself one of these for a while and as my parents gave me £100 for my birthday a couple of days ago, I've now ordered one - £90 a throw, but it will last for years to come.

I'm also a flat cap wearer, so all I need now is a set of braces, black steel toe capped boots and a pocket watch.

This is an impulsive posting as I'm very excited.

Belated birthday greetings, Paul.

Is that some sort of posh denim coat?

Cheers Andy.

No, as Rod writes, it's a Monty Don jacket. :D

These were commonly worn by the working class during the late 1800's through to the 1960's and maybe beyond.

Ah yes, making a pair of clogs would be very cool. Maybe with a bit of inlay work or fancy carving. :eusa-think:

I don’t think he would have spent £90 on one of those!

I was only saying to mrs9fingers the other night when Mr Don was on the telly, what a scruffy bugger he looked in that jacket and surely he could afford better and then this thread pops up!

90 notes for that - I cannot believe it! - in my best Victor Meldrew voice.

I have to agree Bob, a completely scruffy toenail...he even goes to the Chelsea FS in that bloody jacket and again, 90 spondulicos for that does seem to be a rip off - Rob

Yup, fair enough for working gear when he is working in the garden but on the show I saw he was visiting a garden where he had advised on changes and was returning for a grand unveiling with the owners friends and family. His dress code just said "I don't respect you enough to turn up properly dressed as the celebrity"

Indeed! Great website thanks for the link. Monty was on Jo Whiley’s evening show last Wednesday talking and picking music. If you listen back he was on from 9pm, so hour into the recording.

Edit: Should have said that’s on Radio 2.

Terrific link HJ - thanks for posting. The end result looks superb! The history of such a garment is fascinating, and I didn't know the carpenter normally wore black. I've always linked these jackets to the late Victorian working class of perhaps engineers, steam engine workers, the building trades etc. I know they became quite popular with some artists too. I wouldn't mind the trousers as well... they have that extra bit on the back for the braces (not sure what they're called), and although I used to wear braces with oversized trousers when I was a young roofing carpenter, I find them uncomfortable now - pity.

I'm going to create a new thread for work wear garments. Just thinking what to call it... :eusa-think:

With Matt already on the French jacket (although he might be going for a Monty as well), and me with my Monty on its way (first one did arrive 2 days ago, but too big [size 44 - Mrs P's fault!] Now awaiting size 42! - trouble with buying online I suppose), that's two new recruits in the Monty Gang.

:obscene-drinkingcheers:

Indeed you can't and very wrong to.

I too have always been one of those blokes, no matter how smart the suit is, I always look a bit scruffy, but mother thinks I'm wonderful. :D

Without getting political... I was in search of an old sketch I remember when Spike was wearing the infamous work jacket. I couldn't find it, but stumbled across this clip.

Who's up for doing their own take on this whilst promoting your very own work jacket?

The new thread...

It's so difficult to gauge when buying online. I have jackets ranging from 42 to 46 all of which fit me. :P
