Gerrit Rietveld?

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

Gerrit Rietveld?

I didn't know where to put this so it's here.

Is anyone familiar with the work of this old Dutch guy? Have you ever seen any of his chairs with cushions? I want to build some quick chairs for our sun room and I was thinking of his crate chairs. I've done up a SketchUp model for plans and I might try making a two-seater version as well.

Any thoughts?

No I’ve only seen ones like a Mondrian painting and they look very uncomfortable. Never sat in one though .

Of course... a key furniture designer from the de stiji and Bauhaus era... All classic, instantly recognisable designs from a 'form' perspective though none (without a cushion) partially comfortable. I made a 'Z' chair for my brother years ago.

What drew you to the Crate Chair, Dave? I feel it would only appeal to a mid century 'furniture' enthusiast. It's a bit clunky IMO.

I've heard the Red and Blue chair is pretty comfortable considering how it looks. Years ago I worked up plans for a child-sized version of the Red and Blue chair for a friend who built it for her nephew. He seemed to love it. Of course children can sit on a pile of tin cans and broken bottles and be comfortable.

Jim, I like all sorts of different furniture styles including Mid-Century Modern. As I said, I'm considering the crate chair because it would be very quick to build and it would be fairly inexpensive. I haven't settled on it yet and I'm going to wait until it gets a little warmer and the DIY stores start stocking replacement patio furniture cushions to see what I can get easily. If I add cushions, most of the chair won't be visible anyway. The crate chair just give me an easy place to start. It'll be simple to modify the design to a two seater as well.

This is my sketch of it with cushions.

That could almost be a Morris (?) Chair but made from reclaimed timber, not oak,

I thought of a Morris chair as I was drawing it. The seat is low enough and has enough dump that I also thought of Adirondack chairs. There's a not so well-known version of the Adirondack chair called a Westport chair.

The one on the right is made so it matches the width of the originals. The one on the right was widened slightly and the seat lowered to accommodate a cushion for a woodworker who enjoys his food. :)

FWIW, here's a Morris chair I modeled some time back.

I do like that much more than your original drawing.

Me too, though I can see the appeal for speed factor with the 'Crate'.

Thank you, gentlemen.

Rod, are you going to come for 3D Basecamp? I'll be there. I'm going to be doing a couple of presentations and a workshop on using LayOut.
