Tailgaters

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

Comic hall jokes aside that car provided me with more fun than any other I have ever owned. Unlike all my mates I had a clean licence - still have - impossible to get caught speeding in a 2CV.

I also push started it every day for 3 weeks on a trip to St Tropez and back. The widget that stopped the alternator over charging the battery had broke and the battery was boiling dry every day. I hust filled it up with water and carried on - ignorance was bliss back then.

When in St Tropez we unhooked the rear seat and sat on the beach wondering why only those that shouldn't did partake in naturism.

My first vehicle was a 1960 A35 van in British Racing Green complete with semaphore indicators.
So underpowered we had to use reverse to travel up some of the hills in the Yorkshire Dales.
The semaphores used to stick but a heavy thump on the vans sides freed them.
Recirculatory heater and no windscreen washers - a squeezey bottle instead.
Very easy to service though.
That was followed with a Ford Anglia 105E (notchback).

I recall seeing a TV programme about some blokes doing a mammoth cross-country journey by some obscure route...it might have been a competition, I can't recall. What I do remember is the four of them picking up the 2CV to get round some obstacles.

It's well known, public roads are a big killer in our country and it's not the machines, it's the people in control of them, or rather, not in control.

When I was a bike rider years ago, I was one of those idiots riding at silly speeds, bum hanging off the bike round those bends, pulling the front wheel into the air etc etc. But looking back, I feel very lucky for not hurting anyone else but myself. These days as an ex-rider, I try to be more observant on the road for their sake, but you cannot avoid missing some of these riders, especially those who ride super bikes and believe they're Valentino.

The link below will take you to a video clip which was uploaded to put a message out for all motorists to adhere to the speed limit.

Consisting of two men in their 40's riding super bikes on Cornish roads at ridiculous speeds. The odds are clearly against them.

I've seen many of these videos and they're quite sobering to watch. Although the law has got tighter over the years, I do wonder if they should be much much tighter for cars & bikes that exceed a certain threshold of power - difficult one I know. Dash cams have proved to show good evidence for convicting some of the idiots. Maybe that's the answer - all new vehicles should have integral dash cams continuously running and streaming back to a huge central computer.

Not just the two wheeled Valentinos to worry about. On the main road at the end of our lane some ejit clocked at 200kph last week. I’d hate to be within 100yds of that road when he has a blowout, or a boar or a deer (I have seem both) run out in front of him.

Perhaps if he didn't wear such daft baggy shorts he'd have stood a better chance !

Reminds me of one of the Tel OB rigger supervisors - a keen motorcyclist..

"There I was riding back home after a few pints. Going very steady although perhaps I should have walked. I saw a set of traffic lights at green as I approached. As I got closer they started to change and normally I would have opened up and nipped across just in time. But then I saw a policeman the other side of the lights so I thought I'd better stop. Only one problem. I forgot to put my leg down."

A pal of mine years ago did almost exactly the same thing. My other pals and me had to get off our bikes to lift up (can't remember his name) Nobby's bike and he had a girt big exhaust burn on his leg. Silly old sod.

I once ended up on someone's front lawn. I can't remember if that was on the bike though - it may have been in my old Mk 1 Ford Escort. :eusa-think:

We certainly have tailgaters here, but at least in the Midwest the roads are usually flatter and straighter so it is easier to pass. In my tiny bit of experience in your neck of the woods people will blow past you if you give them a flash of daylight. The other issue is that its hard to pull over to lets the idiots pass even if you wanted to--no shoulders and the hedges are 3 inches from your mirrors.

We’ve lots of single track roads around here (with the odd passing bay) which I try to avoid as replacing smashed wing mirrors is very expensive.
