The Repair Shop

Postby Pinch » 20 Mar 2018, 20:43

I've never seen this programme until last night. It looks like it's on every week day at 6:30 pm on BBC2 after Eggheads. I noticed it last night and the synopsis mentioned a rosewood table repair, so I decided to record it to watch later in the evening.

The Repair Shop has a very nice set up in a converted barn with a group of artisans who can put their hands to most things crafty. The public are invited to bring anything they have which needs repairing and the artisans will repair the item.

In last night's programme, a brother & sister brought in an old toy steam boat which didn't work, a couple brought in an old rosewood table with broken/missing veneer and a lady brought in her old panda bear which was also in need of TLC. All these items have sentimental values and stories to the people's families. The steam boat repair was fun and a complete success - it chugged along on the local pond like a dream. The panda bear story was very touching but sadly, the rosewood table top repair was completely awful.

The young artisan chap who took on this repair was clearly not up to the job. The prep-work was wrong, the glue application was wrong and the cold clamping was weak. He actually pointed out while he was clamping the work that he wanted to be sure there were going to be no bumps in the veneer once the glue had cured. :eusa-doh:

When the job was finished, the presenter did his bit praising the work while the film crew were zooming in and oh boy, the joints were terrible and the humps & bumps in that new veneer work was absolutely shocking! I felt sorry for the owners when they arrived to pick up their newly repaired family heirloom - even though they complimented the repair with huge praise, but that's television I suppose.

I've recorded tonight's show to watch a bit later.

I remember watching the first series and always thought, even without Pinch's expert eye, that young furniture restorer chap was the weakest link.

The clock repairer has had the best jobs this series, steam engine road roller, steam powered boat and a replica fire engine. The ceramicist and the painting restorer probably have the hardest and most skilled jobs and the way those fluffy toy restorers turn rags into cuddly toys makes me smile.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Last night's was interesting with the village sign for Winterborne Stickland - 3 miles up the road is my workshop.

I'll go through Stickland tomorrow and have a butchers hook.

The Panda looked like he was originally stuffed with bacon lardons...

You had to be quick to see the bubble shots, though with the pressing you knew it would be a disaster especially with such a viscous adhesive... Should of slipped it in the old bag for some good ol vacuum action

I'm really enjoying this programme. These guys do some very nice repairs and all for good reason. It's really nice, lighthearted with sentimental stories. 8-)

A few years ago I met a young lady upholsterer who's based a few miles up the road from me. She gave me one of her business cards although it didn't go anywhere, but I do remember thinking she was a woman on a mission, and I see she's started climbing the ladder as the upholsterer on The Repair Shop - good on her. 8-)

Watching last night's episode, the young "wood expert" guy was restoring a child's rocking chair. One of the tasks was to repair some old joints that had come apart. He made no mention of removing the old glue and, as he applied some very ordinary looking white wood glue to the joints I was reminded of something that was drilled into me as a trainee guitar repairman: "You can't glue glue to glue"

That said, I'm enjoying the series very much, particularly where ancient mechanisms are taken apart and restored.

I think the wood chap (Jay?) is more of a finishes man. His woodworking skills are not that good. I watched last night's episode much later in the evening and yep, he was a bit naughty again. I must admit, I'm homing in more on Malc's view. :eusa-think:

Give it go Matt, you'll enjoy it. It's nice, light, friendly and they do some wonderful restorations. I do find Jay a little bit irritating though. :x

Edit: Watched last nights and very good. I have some names mixed up - not Jay, he's okay... t'other one.
