Sheared wheel stud

Postby chataigner » 25 Apr 2018, 13:25

I'm not happy at all ! During a routine check on the car a while back I noticed a wheel nut missing, further check and it's actually the stud that's gone - sheared. This has been dragging on as spares seemed to be problem and I've been driving gently on 4 studs instead of 5.

Now we finally understand why and I'm VERY not happy
Why would I care it's only a stud - but no it isnt - it seems that you cant replace a stud on the Ford Kuga, you have to replace the whole hub. Quote is for 478€.

Never been touched except by a pro - however last time was more than 6 months ago at a big chain of tyre fitters so I cant prove anything.
Cheers !

That’s not good and very strange how it could have happened.
If they were left loose it would have elongated the wheel so I reckon it must have been over tightened. And that’s odd as garages normally use automatic torque wrenches.
My car uses bolts that screw into the hub, is there any scope in drilling out, threading and using a bolt?

I can’t tell without seeing it but when I worked on Fords many many years ago the studs were pushed into the hubs from the back. They were splined to prevent them rotating and an interference fit to hold them in place. I can’t see why the old broken stud can’t be pushed out and a new one pushed back in? The trick is getting a spare stud if they’re still made that way. I wouldn’t necessarily expect a Ford dealer to do this for you but an independent might if they can get the part. Just a thought.

Hey,
The studs usually just push out and can be replaced. I have done it a few times on the transit, and it has always been after it has had someone tighten the nuts with an impact wrench. I do all the work on it myself nowadays and have a couple of them as spare in case it happens again.
On yours I'm not sure if you have to take the hub off to attack the stud, to get access to put a new on in. Is it the front or rear wheel?
What year is the Kuga I'll see if I can get the part number.
My local Ford place here is really good, they think I am a crazy English. They have been really good for getting parts and giving advice and occasional use of the ramp. Fords peg their spare prices across the group if it is car specific, but they are not too expensive.

This place https://www.micksgarage.com/d/wheel-stu ... 7/products

Seems to supply studs for Kugas up to 2013 if that is any good?
Also some on ebay
However discussion on ford forums also repeat the mantra of whole hub changing according to Fraud.
Good Luck

David,

I've just had an online chat with the wheel stud specialist Mick's garage. I've assumed yours is a late model and early cougars have readily available studs.

Chat.
"How can we help today? : Trying to advise a mate who has a 2017 Ford Kuga with a sheared wheel stud. Ford garage is telling him he needs a whole new hub for loads of money. Surely this can't be right. Can you supply new studs please?

Hey! Welcome to MicksGarage.com! Colin here. One moment and I'll check that for you.

I have looked for wheel studs, there are none listed. On looking at the hub however the issue that I see is that the outer and inner mounts on the bearing/hub are too close to allow the stud be pressed into place.
That could be why Ford say you need the bearing/hub assembly."

OK but presumably the hub could be removed and a stud fitted by a decent mechanic?

The hub and bearing are a pressed up sealed unit and most likely contain the ABS trigger ring also, if it could be successfully taken apart, and this would be tricky, it may be possible to get another stud into place, however we do not sell them.

Sadly David I think you are stuffed and will have to cough up.

You might get a replacement hub from a car parts place/bearing factor for less money. It will possibly be a simple bolt on part and a fairly easy DIY job.

More online searching found this.

https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/ford/kuga ... g?criteria[100]=HA

Check that it is the right model of Kuga II but its 100 notes including vat.

Is this the right type of hub?

http://www.mister-auto.co.uk/en/wheel-h ... lsrc=aw.ds

Add the cost of the bearing with ABS ring and it’s about £85.00 - £90.00 plus labour?

Thanks for looking guys, but no-one I've spoken to here is willing to attempt a repair. As Bob puts it, I'm stuffed for around 500€.

I expect they will be charging list for a Ford part.
Plus new bolts for hub and caliper.
Job should be a doddle

Wheel off
Caliper off
Brake disc off
ABS sensor release
Hub swap - 4 bolts
Reassemble

It is a newish motor so nothing should be corroded

No more than an hour less for a Fraud trained mechanic
