LED panel mounting - Update

Postby RogerS » 05 Jun 2018, 10:35

All the panels that I have mounted have lost adhesion in some parts between the frame and the covering panel. This has resulted in buckling of the panel revealing the LED lights in that part.

The panels do get quite hot/warm to the touch around the perimeter where the LED bulbs are. So I am thinking that mounting these panels as close to the ceiling as I have

results in them heating up sufficiently to loosen the adhesive bond. I'd be very interested to hear how any of your panels are mounted and whether they are as close to the ceiling as mine.

Do any of them come with mounting instructions?

All our LEDs are conventional downlighters inserted in the plaster board ceilings so get some ventilation.

Possibly...but I don't recall seeing any but I could be wrong.

Mine didn't, just a small pack of 4 brackets that I couldn't for the life of me work out how they would work, then I remembered they would be for suspending these within a suspended ceiling, so can't be used (in that same way) for my application.

Malc (I think it was) worked a good solution and his are open around the edges, being hung from the supplied brackets onto ceiling mounted hooks.

It is a design defect.

My electrician noticed the exposure of the LED bulbs and I explained the situation.

It is NOT down to over-heating due to the panels being mounted too close to the ceiling. We took down, at random, two panels and mounted them in free air. They were left unlit for several days to eliminate any residual heat and ensure that the back panel had returned to its original shape. No LED bulbs visible.

Power was then applied and within about 10-15 minutes the back panels had buckled revealing once again the LED bulbs. This is a design defect and so the nine panels need to be returned to you for replacement. I don;t believe that the back panel is actually glued down. It's a very flimsy bit of metallised plastic from what I can see that buckles with only a tiny amount of localised heat from the LED bulbs.

I'm not having much luck with my purchases, am I ?

I can confirm, that the inch or so between the back of my panels and the ceiling, appears to me to be about the same temperature as that ambient.

No scientific methods of measuring temperature, you understand.

There does not appear to be any deformation of the panel framing, either.
