So how long do we reckon ?

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

I have to say that watching Germany get beaten by S Korea is as good as England winning the world cup.

When that second goal went in I was up and screaming "GET ...... IN!!" so loud it scared the cat.

Would have been nice if it was us that made them suffer rather than the Koreans.

I realise now that I don't understand the offside rule. In the first half there was a long ball kicked into the Swedish half and our player was between their player and the goal and he ran and got the ball. I thought that that was offside..clearly not.

If you watched the replay, he (Sterling, I'm presuming) wasn't offside when the ball was kicked, he ran from an onside position. He may have been in an offside position when he received it, but that is irrelevant.

He was trying to be a hero a few times when a simple pass would have gave us a better chance

Just finished watching, I think the scoreline flattered England. Belgium and France looked impressive in their 1/4 final matches. England did not. Not sure who would make the better oppostion for the semi. Russia at home with all the local support or Croatia who have some excellent and technically gifted players.

Kicked by whom? Offside is simple, there must be two opposition players between the furthest player and the goal at the precise moment the ball is played forwards (important) to him, level counts as onside. If he is onside when it is played then he can be 30yds 'offside' when he reaches it, doesn't matter).

There are a number of times this doesn't count: if the ball is played sideways/backwards to someone (hasn't gone forwards), when the ball is played by an opposition player, when the ball is played by your player (not forwards) and deflects off opposition into your path, or finally if kicked from a dead ball kick by the keeper.

Was it any of those?

Well their luck finally ran out. I don't mean lucky performances, they were far from lucky, I mean lucky with the opposition they had to play to get that far. It was fun while it lasted. France will will win for sure.

Unless those Croats continue to play so physically aggressively and dirty ...

Does the game change at the semi-final stage ? I don't recall extra time in their earlier game where it went to a penalty shoot-out.

What would have happened if England had drawn after extra time ? Penalty shoot-out? Then if the shoot-out was a draw, what then ? Toss of a coin ? Another penalty shoot-out ? All very gladiatorial.

What would have happened if England had drawn after extra time ? Penalty shoot-out? yes Then if the shoot-out was a draw, what then ? Toss of a coin ? Another penalty shoot-out ? 5 pens each, then if still a draw they keep going until one side misses and the next scores All very gladiatorial.

Penalty shootouts work thus, each team take turns to complete 5 penalties, if they are tied at the end of those then they continue taking penalties (working through the players left on the pitch at the final whistle), in sudden death fashion.

This means England take one, score, Croatia take one, score, end of round one of sudden death, onto round two, until there is a round where one team misses.

If all 11 players have taken their penalties, including goalkeepers, then you back to the start again.

I think he longest penalty shootout in recent history, in a 1st class match, was around the 50 penalties taken mark.

here's one for your Mark.
Why do defences always line up the wall on the 10yard line (ok metres)? Take Trippier's goal last night. Had the wall been 3 or 4 yards back from the line they could well have stopped the shot on it's downwards trajectory?
