So how long do we reckon ?

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

Well, the theory is, around the box (which is 18yds from goal) it is very difficult for a player to get the ball up, over the wall and down into the net with enough power to trouble the keeper, so having the wall as close as possible maximises your defensive blocking area.

Now as we saw, Trippier managed to defeat that brilliantly, so in that instance you're right, but...the further back the wall is the more opportunity the attacking team have to work up some clever routine to bypass them without shooting straight from the dead ball.

All that being said, it probably comes down to that being the way it's been done for years and nobody has come up with a better reason to do it differently...

But surely if the wall was further back, and closer to the goal, there would be less room to bypass them.

But then maybe more chance for an own goal in the melee post-kick ?

Not strictly true. When taking a free kick the hardest part is to get the ball up and down quickly, and 10yds isn't very far away to get it up, then to dip straight away. If the wall is further away then in theory you could get the ball over their heads and on it's way back down more easily.

Genuinely there are arguments for/against both.

I don't know that much about footie besides a few friends who were brothers who use to fight every weekend when their teams use to play (Liverpool and Man u) Really enjoyed watching England play. Pickford in my eyes deserves a medal for his performance. Compared to Joe Hart there is no comparison ! Southgate - I saw him go round to everyone of his squad and comfort them (in a really blokey manly way grrrr !) I really loved watching it- well done England. My only regret is not recording the match where we thrashed em. Pickford is my new found hero !

Pickford and Trippier were probably our best and most consistent players. 2nd half yesterday was very good. We will see of the improvements continue when they play Croatia again in October, behind close doors IIRC

While I’m pleased the team had a decent run & gave a much needed boost to the supporters I really feel the press are getting overly excited.
They beat 2 less than average teams, their B team lost to Belgium’s B team, they won a lottery penalty shoot out that was very close to going the other way & got knocked out by their first decent opposition, their A team then went on to loose to Belgium’s A team.

Add to that that most goals came from set pieces & not open play the only real positive is they finally won a penalty shoot out. I like Southgate & feel if he could find a reliable striker the team could do a lot better as we squandered far too many chances in front of goal.

You are right Doug. Last time round England could not beat Iceland so they are makng progress. As well as Croatia I see that England will also have to play Spain. We will see then how good the improvement has been.

But will we ever field a team good enough if the clubs won't release their players ?

My understanding was that for a lot of these competitions if they happen during the main football season that clubs don't want to run the risk of some of their best players being injured.

At least that's what my wife said.

They don't happen during the season, WC and Euro's are always in between seasons, unless...the Dubai WC has now been announced to be in November/December, which is bang in the middle of European league season's, so something will happen there.

Generally clubs are loathed to release players for meaningless friendlies when played mid league season, or dead rubbers of qualification games, but I don't know of any club that could or has not released players to play in a WC or Euro's when it is out of season...

In fairness I thinks Roger’s better half is suggesting clubs wont release players for friendlies. In essence though the games against Croatia and Spain are not friendlies but part of UEFAs new Nations League.

Technically they are not allowed to refuse an international call up. The only acceptable (other than the obvious like bereavements etc) reason for not accepting a call up is if injured, and even then the National Federations then want the player to be checked over by their own medical staff to prove it.

Of course, the National manager wants to avoid a war with his club counterparts and as such, in dead rubbers, they will often turn a blind eye, but for any competitive match then the clubs really don't have much choice.
