My thread of two weeks ago had 93 views and zilch response. Let's hope you have better luck.

If it goes through then I will have to stop woodworking living where I do. Or create yet another dummy company just to get round this stupidity.

I send a letter expressing my concerns for the future of specialist mail order tools suppliers as well as the difficulty of buying tools as a private individual to my MP who in turn sent a good letter raising my concerns to The Lord Chancellor and Secretary for State for Justice.

She also replied to me explaining how the new Offensive Weapons Bill will:
- Stop knives being sent to residential addresses after they are bought online;
- ban rapid fire rifles, certain powerful firearms and bump stocks;
- make it illegal to posses certain offensive weapons like zombie knives and knuckle dusters in private; I better get rid of all of mine :)
- update the definition of a flick knife to reflect weapon design changes and
- change the legal definition for threatening with an offensive weapon to make prosecutions easier.

None of which were issues I raised with her. She did however promise to reply again when the Sec for State responds.

I am not holding my breath that any changes will be made that will make life easier for us.

However I hear one company will be sending the "dangerous weapons" to one of the local pick up points that people often use if they are not going to be in. I do wonder if it will become a tick box exercise where you will get a tick box to say your address is a business address like the over 18 tick box?

I will get onto the petition now.

Yes, this was mentioned over on UKW. However if the read the Bill then they would realise that they would still be contravening the law.

The petition is going to be a waste of time. Much better to submit a formal written objection here

Afternoon Roger

My thread of two weeks ago had 93 views and zilch response.

That's why I started a new thread.

Thanks for the link to the site for raising objections. I had a quick look at it and was unimpressed. The whole thing could be a lot more user friendly, but I suspect that's not what they want.

I'll submit something and see if there's a response.

Cheers

ICBA to read the whole UKW thread but apart from Turner's Retreat have any other of the big tool suppliers been contacted or passed any public comments? I'd love to hear what Axminster, for example, have to say on the matter.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

I had an email from Classic Hand Tools, I have signed the petition.

I do remember some time ago than eBay had a thing about knifes, I think it got dropped as things like planner knifes fell under it, I had one set I tried to buy refused by their system. A week later the seller contacted me and the sale then went through.
Regards,
Dave
My tool kit is almost complete, only a few more to get.

I'll precis it for you, Andy.

A pointless bill dreamt up by numbnuts as a knee-jerk reaction to pander to be seen to be 'doing something'.

A pointless bill without any thought as to the wider consequences viz mail-order of woodworking tools to residential properties,

A pointless bill restricting the sale of 'blades' to residential properties, the majority of which already have an 'armoury' in the kitchen

A pointless bill that will make it exceptionally difficult for small one-man band woodworkers/cabinetmakers whose workshops are located at their residential property.

How long will it be when we have to have something like a gun locker or a special secure box while transporting your tools. This will put paid to most demonstrators at shows.
cheers and beers (oops mustn't say that)

Petition signed,

Not because I will have to go to a tool shop, I quite like doing that! :D
But because it is despicable the way the government preach about inclusivity for the disabled and then do things like this that add further difficulties to pursuing any hobby involving a bladed tool.

Just received a reply over the petition the contents below.

The Government has responded to the petition you signed – “Remove article 15 of the Offensive Weapons Bill (HC Bill 232)”.

Government responded:

The Bill prevents knives which cause serious harm from being delivered to residential addresses but does not stop delivery of bladed items and knives to business premises or businesses run from home.

Retailers online and offline are prohibited from selling knives to under 18s. Evidence from online test purchase operations conducted over the last decade, where online shopping has become increasingly common, shows that the majority of sampled online retailers failed to have effective age verification procedures in place. The failure rate for online test purchases of knives has not significantly improved over this period.

The Government has therefore sought to improve these outcomes by conducting a public consultation and introducing legislation that will place more stringent controls on online sellers of knives.

Following concerns expressed in the consultation, certain defences were introduced into the Bill that has been published. The prohibition on the delivery of knives to residential addresses is now limited to those knives that can cause serious injury. If ordered online these knives will need to be collected from a place where age verification can take place, either by the purchaser or their representative.

In respect of other bladed items and knives, the Bill provides a number of defences around the prohibition of delivery to a residential address. For example, deliveries to business premises, including where a business is run from home, would not be affected by the prohibition placed in the Bill on delivery to a residential address. Other items that would be exempt from the prohibition on delivery to a residential address would include encased razor blades; knives with a blade of less than 3 inches; knives that cannot cause serious injury, for example table knives; bladed products designed or manufactured to specifications from the buyer such as bespoke knives. There are also exemptions for bladed products that are used for sporting purposes, such as fencing swords and bladed products that would be used for re-enactment activities.

The Petitions Committee will take a look at this petition and its response. They can press the government for action and gather evidence. If this petition reaches 100,000 signatures, the Committee will consider it for a debate.

The Committee is made up of 11 MPs, from political parties in government and in opposition. It is entirely independent of the Government. Find out more about the Committee: https://petition.parliament.uk/help#petitions-committee

Precisely. I can't find any reference to their comments in the Bill. Just 'blades'. No definition. Presumably that Sabatier kitchen knife is now a no-no.

Morning all

Disappointing, but not surprising is it? They might just as well have said that the Moon goes round the Earth. True, but totally irrelevant.

My MP hit the nail on the head, referring to unintended consequences. He's forwarding my comments to the Home Secretary.

And there I am on the list of Written Evidence! Democracy at work. Thanks for the link, Dave...those minutes of the meeting make interesting reading especially the firearm one. The first meeting seemed too full of hand-wringing virtue-signallers.
